Last year an amazing thing ended. It had started in April and it ended in September. Arguably the finest animation project that Gainax had ever crafted, and one show that is sure to go down in history as a landmark in the anime industry, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. If you haven’t seen it, don’t even waste your time here. Go watch it. Now.

Gurren Lagann, at its core, is a mecha show. More specifically, a super-robot show. But it’s more than that. As you watch the show, with each passing amazingly well animated episode, characters grow. Most prominently, the little digger named Simon, raised in a little underground village. He is the surrogate little brother of a manly, flamboyant man named Kamina. Simon looks up to this wild, hot-blooded man and wishes to be like him in the beginning, because Kamina is someone he can believe in. As the show reaches its mid-point, though, Simon comes to the realization that he himself is his own man and his timid personality explodes, birthing someone that eventually rescues every living organism in the entire universe from being utterly destroyed.

Yes, Gurren Lagann is a tale of epic proportions. And it tells that tale very well. The entire show benefits from awesome animation quality, epic action sequences, inspirational speeches and a steady, building pace. The supporting cast is also great and full of personality; characters like Kamina and Kittan will always have a place in the hearts of viewers. Not that Simon won’t, of course. The mecha designs are great, though a little wild, and are, much like the characters, very colorful and flamboyant. Designs like the King Kittan are pleasantly funky, while more conventionally badass designs such as the Gurren Lagann and its many forms and the similar Rasengan are just plain awesome. And, on a rather fleeting note, the soundtrack is awesome.

Honestly, I can’t go that far into detail about anything because something major happens so often in Gurren Lagann. So let me state again: Go watch this show. Why are you still reading this?! Gurren Lagann takes everything that made every super robot show from the 70s until now and compresses it until one massive, mind-blowingly awesome, epic story — modernized in all the best ways. There’s absolutely no reason not to love it. And when you watch it, you will.

It’s a really good show. I maybe wouldn’t call it Revolutionary, or anything like that…
But it is pretty awesome, I can think of some shows I like better though…(But I like weird ass crap)

This is an awesome show, even though at first I doubted its greatness cause a friend over hyped it.
This is a perfect example of why gainax rules the anime industry!!!
If a show can actually make the characters stay with me for a while, That is a work of pure genius!

I freaking love this show. It is indeed a true masterpiece.
Oh, and Alucard, the reason you don’t think it’s revolutionary is because you haven’t finished it yet. Seriously, dude, this show gets better and better with each episode. Once you reach the big moment in the midpoint (for those who have seen the show, you know which one I’m talking about), it’s just a roller coaster ride all the way to finish.
Have I mentioned that I love this show? I do.

I’m gonna disagree…not for any reason. Just to be contrary. The world needs a contrary opinion. (Like a crazy village idiot who gets tossed into the stocks for shouting nonsense…THATS ME!)

I haven’t even heard of this show. But after reading your blog and seeing the pics you have posted of it, I am quite interested in picking it up. Is it on dvd??
I’m very picky picky about the anime I watch. Cuz to me it seems the main protaginists are the same people. They are either quiet, introverted, has spicky hair and wields a big sword OR talkative, extroverted, has spicky hair and wields a big sword.
I have a certain anime on dvd that I compare all others to. It has a unique main character, great music, style, humor, and friggin AMAZING action. That anime is called “Cowboy Bebop”. My point is, if anyone can interest me to a new anime then they have just accomplished something monumental.

Gurren Lagann is the most awesome show I have seen in a very long time. The dub won’t be available until early next year, but the show will be available on a sub-only DVD starting next month.

Gurren Lagann will also be airing on Sci-Fi soon, so you can catch it there this summer. July 28 at 11:00 PM, otherwise known as their Animonday block (which aired Noein, Macross Plus and few other greats).

Waitaminute, will the dub version be on Sci-Fi, or will it be subbed? ‘Cause Animonday pretty much plays dub only, amirite?

It’ll be the dub, surprisingly! They’ll be airing the dub long before it’s officially released by Bandai.

I’m not worried about Bandai handling the dub. I’ll check it out when it airs on Sci-Fi.

The only thing I am worried about bandai, IS THAT THEY WILL PROBABLY GO SPECIAL EDITION CRAZY WITH THE DAMN DVDS !!!!
June 20th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Oh, they will. Especially with the dubs.
I refuse to buy any special editions, though. After that Haruhi fiasco I was put through! (I understand the price for the first, but for the rest? HAH!)
