Metal Gear Online - Part 01

Gaming, MGS

Metal Gear Online BETA started on Friday and I’m betting half the PS3 owners were playing it on the first day. The game has two modes for online playing: Automatching and Freebattle. The Automatching has three lobbies: Snake, Liquid, and Raiden. On Friday, all three lobies were maxed out (999 people in each lobby).

The other mode, Freebattle, has more lobbies (Otacon, Meryl, Eva, etc), but I didn’t check how many people were in those. I played for five hours straight that day and surprisingly I came in either first or second. But I guess that’s because BETA had just started and everyone was a newbie. Heh~

I’m planning on writing about the BETA every now and then for those of you who didn’t get in. As for this post, I’m going to talk about the controls. Feel free to share your thoughts.

First thing I noticed was the control change. It’s very different from the old MGO that came with Subsistence.

Button:

  • You can climb up ladders, lean against the wall, wake people up, drag unconscious enemies, and interact with objects like the human canon;
  • Switches to first person view;
  • While lying on the ground, it allows you to flip on your back or vice-versa;
  • Salutes and/or activates the SOP system when you’re near allies;
  • Hold down to play dead when you’re lying on the ground;
  • When you grab someone using CQC, (and if you have CQC level up) you can scan them or kill them (cut throat).

The Button:

  • Reloading your weapong. Nothing else.

Button:

  • Crawling and crouching;
  • You can roll (like old MGO) while running;
  • When you’re aiming (over the shoulder or FPV), you can press any direction plus to jump to that direction;
  • While lying, you can tap with or direction to roll in that direction.

Button:

  • Turns on/off auto-aim.

Button:

  • Aiming. Hold it and you get over-the-shoulder view. This is when you can turn on/off auto-aim by pressing . To change into FPS, you press .

Button:

  • Firing when you’re aiming;
  • It’s also CQC (you have to hold it, not tap) when you’re not aiming;
  • When you grab someone with CQC, you have to press this button firmly to choke them;
  • If you’re not aiming, tap it to do a kick/punch.

Button:

  • Equip/unequip menu items just like MGS2 and MGS3.

Button:

  • Also equip/uneqiup;
  • While aiming, it allows you to use sub-weapon (i.e. if you have knife equipped, is stab and is electric shock).

Button:

  • No function. It doesn’t do anything.

Button:

  • Changes the camera angel to show what’s in front of you;
  • Press it two times fast to reset the camera position (not much difference than the above function).

Button:

  • Codec and texting. Same functions as old MGO.

Button:

  • Opens up the menu screen.

P.S. There are tons of MGO videos available on YouTube.

      oh boy the beta! when I first tried the player launcher, I ended up losing a chunk of my health, but that didn’t matter. Since afterwards, it was headshot mania!!!

    2. Heiae Heiae Says:

      God, I want to play it so bad. But, despite the fact I’m being left out of the beta, I will have a chance to play the actual MGO when the game does come out. I’ll just suck hard.

      Anyways, a nice read. Seeing as I haven’t played it, it’s interesting to see the changes in the controls from Subsistence.

      I noticed one error, though. You used the L3 button image twice - I think you meant to use R3 the second time!

      You’re right. *fixed* Thank you.

    4. AlucardsFate AlucardsFate Says:

      Wait…what Player Launcher…where is it!?

    5. TheParasite TheParasite Says:

      I saw the Player Launcher yesterday. One of my mates climbed on it, then POW! Someone picked up a headshot.

    6. admin admin Says:

      The launcher is in G.G.; there are more a couple of them, I think. But for some reason it didn’t show up last time AlucardsFate and I were playing. You’ll see it if you go to the training lobby.

    7. AlucardsFate AlucardsFate Says:

      Hmm…I’m gonna look for it later. On another note…new blog avatars? I gots me some Auska beeyotch!

    8. Spim Ransley Spim Ransley Says:

      Spim Ransley wants to try a Player Launcher. Badly. He wants to launch himself to Hawaii, maybe drink a little bourbon, flirt with the natives. Know what I’m sayin’?

    9. admin admin Says:

      Not really, but it’s interesting how you refer to yourself in 3rd person.

    10. FashionConscious FashionConscious Says:

      I haven’t played the game (I don’t have a PS3), but I heard from my best friend, Jacky, that in Blood Bath, it’s impossible to win as Snake.
