Disturbed by recent events, Raul questions the future of Romdo. Meanwhile, Re-l and Iggy explore a strange antiquated dome inhabited only by primitive AutoReivs.
In episode 07, Re-l was attacked by infected AutoReivs and the episode ends with Daedalus filling out Re-l’s death certificate. The next few episodes were all about Vincent, Pino, and their journey to Mosque, but in this episode we switch back to Romdo and see what’s going on there.
Episode begins by Raul monitoring Daedalus and talking about how Daedalus has lost his “Raison d’être“. The term is French and it means “reason to live”; this term is one of the major themes in Ergo Proxy. Basically, Raul says that Daedalus is an empty shell now that his reasons to live, which was to protect Re-l and to research on the Proxy, are both gone: Re-l died and the Proxy escaped.
Recently, the Dome has been losing power every now and then, but only for a few seconds. But the most recent one was for 2 minutes and 17 seconds (0:02:17:23 to be exact). Being the smart head of the Bureau he is, he figures out Daedalus is behind it and decides to have a little chat with him. How did he figure out it’s Daedalus? Well, every citizen in the Dome city has their own unique number and Daedalus’ number is 021723. See it now?
They had a long chat, so I’ll just summarize what happened:
- Re-l is still alive
- Daedalus thought Raul sent those infected AutoReivs (episode 07) to attack Re-l, but that’s not true
- Raul tells Daedalus that it was infect the Regent, Re-l’s grandfather, who sent those AutoReivs
- Raul gives a new “toy” to Daedalus to work on… the toy is the Monad Proxy that Ergo Proxy killed in episode two
Re-l has escaped from Romdo and is now in an “old” dome city. I said “old” because everything there looks a lot like this time and age. The houses, the cars, even the AutoReivs are very simple compare to Romdo or other cities we have seen so far. Re-l quickly realizes that there aren’t anybody else in this city besides them. Iggy tells her that it’s fine and as soon as thy recharge their ship, they’ll leave this city. Re-l then wonders off somewhere and falls asleep. She wakes up (well, she wakes up in her dream… she’s still dreaming though) and sees a little girl who looks just like her when she was a kid. The little then runs off and Re-l follows her to a garden where they start talking. To keep it short, Re-l realizes that her Raison d’être is to find out the truth about Proxies.
In the last scene, we see Daedalus working on Amrita Cells and figuring out a way to destroy them. As you recall, Amrita Cells are supposedly indestructible by humans; only a Proxy can destroy them, but Daedalus has now succeeded in destroying them as well. He has prepared special bullets for Re-l to use against the Proxies.

PLEASE, keep this up. I love your high res pics of all the important parts. Ergo Proxy is my favorite anime(due to story, setting, best english voice acting I’ve ever heard, and animation). Liam O’brien does his best voicing Vincent and Travis Willingham pulls off my all time favorite lines of his in the next few episodes as Iggy.

Of course I will! Ergo Proxy is one of the best anime ever made. Too bad it’s under everybody’s radar though.
Have to agree with the voice over thing you said. I usually (never?) don’t listen to dubs, but Ergo Proxy is an exception. I really like the guy who does Vincent’s - Liam O’brien is very talented.
Also, glad someone noticed these good snapshots! It’s hard work! ^^’
