Thought I should start a “review” blog where I write about the last movie or anime I watched. The idea came from a similar thread we have in the forums. I’ll start off with Ergo Proxy I recently got.
I’ll keep these short and simple: brief summary with lots of pictures. But be warned as they contain spoilers for the episode.
First episode of Ergo Proxy is confusing as hell. You’re introduced to many characters, lots of new info, terms, and names, but don’t let that stop you from watching it! They will all be properly introduced over time. Some of these characters don’t even show up till towards the end of this great series, so relax. First episode introduces Romdo Dome City, a utopia that protects its citizens from the environmental hazards outside of the dome. The setting is certainly in the future where people are co-existing with robots, or Entourage AutoReiv. These AutoReiv’s are designed to help and protect humans. However, recently there have been AutoReiv’s who have become “self-aware” - meaning they can disobey a human order. These AutoReiv’s who have been infected with the Cogito Virus are sought and destroyed. In this episode, when an AutoReivs is infected with the Cogito Virus, you see her kneel down in a prayerful posture. There is a screencap of her below.
In episode one, Re-l (pronounced: “re el”) who is a detective is assigned to investigate an incident where apparently humans have been killed by an infected AutoReiv. During her investigation, she spots an unknown creature in the crime scene, but it gets away. R-l doesn’t know this yet, but these creatures are called Proxy. She’ll learn about them in the upcoming episodes. Later that night, she was confronted by another Proxy at her own house, but before anything happens, the same Proxy she saw earlier that morning also shows up and attacks the other Proxy. And that’s when she passes out and the episode ends. Words don’t do justice to the final scene as it is very intense. The suspense audio track and great quality of animation makes it that much better.
Thoughts: I loved it. The animation is great, the music is great, characters are colorful and unique (did I mention Re-l’s AutoReiv is gay?). It can be confusing in the beginning, but that’s only for the first half of the show. And let’s not forget this is the first episode; these terms and names are the building blocks of what’s to come. There are a lot of things we don’t know yet (What is a Proxy? Where did Cogito Virus originated from?), but, again, this is only the beginning. Overall, this is a great episode and I enjoyed this episode a lot.

Note how the ratio of black to every other color is like 1:1

I’m not an otaku by any means, but the animation style, which is sort of noir, looks great to me.
The story on the other hand…

It’s funny. I watched the first few episodes and don’t remember them at all. This didn’t even refresh my memory.
Perhaps I really should start picking up the DVDs sometime.
Until then, I’ll follow these little blogs. Thinking about doing anything for any other series?

I’ll probably blog the ones I watch, but not all of them. So far, the only other one I’d like to do is Kurenai.
