EGM Closing - confirmation by tomorrow (http://www.whattheyplay.com/blog/2009/01/6/1up-sold-to-hearst-egm-magazine-closes/)
1up is also getting sold. Looks like Game Informer will be the only printed magazine of choice for multiplatform now.

That's too bad.
But magazines now are just....so.....out of date.
I'm sorry to see it though.
I guess I'll pretty much just buy Gamepro for multiplatform games then...

I forgot about Gamepro.
It's not hard to see this happening. I stopped buying magazines when I started posting on 1up regularly.
The last EGM I bought was over a year ago and the news in that issue was old news by the time I bought it.
Gamers are a tech-savvy bunch, so it's no surprise that the majority of us get the gaming news through internet sources.
Now I wonder what will happen to 1up. Especially being folded into this "UGO" business.

Well fuck...
What about us subscribers?
R.I.P. the only magazine I ever loved...

Looks like you'll either:
a) get your money back in the form of a check
or
b) never get your money back
I'm betting on the second one. Hope you didn't pay too much for the subscription.

Subscriptions were never expensive. About the cost of two newstand issues.
Now I'm sad. I love EGM with a passion.

Subscriptions have been practically free for the past few years.

Update: UGO Entertainment Acquires 1up (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3172156)
EGM still dead.
I love coming home and finding a new magazine on the counter...well, at least Ziff's batting a thousand on the whole close-a-magazine tip.

That's too bad. ...Only a matter of time I guess. I hope none of the EGM team lose their jobs. They did quite a lot for the site. So hopefully not. Especially Milky, I would have no other reason to go to 1up if it weren't for Milky's blogs... and The 1up Show. If they stop The 1up Show someone is going to get hurt.

That sucks, EGM is a fine mag. And I'm a fan of print publications in general... I'll never completely go digital.
That said, EGM has been thinner and thinner every month, and it's been hard to justify the newsstand price for the last couple of years. Good thing I had a free subscription this last year!
One other thing: I've checked out this UGO and I think it sucks.

Tragic. I did know this would happen, yes, but that only softened the blow a little bit. EGM will be missed.
As for 1up...well, even though I've become bitter and jaded about that site, a part of me wants to see it survive nonetheless. Hopefully it will hang in there for a while longer -- at the very least, for another three months or so. Yup.

Yeah, I've never liked UGO. They're just so... not 1UP.

crud...it seems that publications that actually cared about the truth, are going dead.
Now everything else is just going to be mainstream garbage.

According to a thread in 1up, they're already deleting the 1up pages of those who have been laid off.

I had just finished Chrono Trigger only to find out this happened, thus ruining my night. This is a day that will live in infamy. EGM was already on the verge of death, but 1up being sold to UGO hit me really hard. Like Ed said in his most recent blog, 1up was already a sinking ship and that we should get out as soon as possible. Looks like he was right.
1up's future is uncertain and it can go nowhere but downhill from here. I hope I would never have to say this, but the time has called for it: I may have to leave 1up once again. While the site has a history with technical issues, I was really patient with the place in the year since my comeback.
If worse comes to worst, I'll leave 1up for good and get some of my friends to join this place.

I can't imagine a world without EGM. I've never trusted any magazine as much as it. Hell, I was ticked when EGM2 died off. Imagine how I feel right now.
Two generations of gamers got their info from them...and now what? Game Informer? With their Gamestop employee writers who don't know Samurai Shodown from Last Blade? OPM, the Blu-Ray's personal concubines? Fug that. I'd rather drop $6 a month for about 200 pages of neat little articles and Seanbaby's torment in Rest of the Crap. I grew up with EGM for my whole life. It's like losing a family member.

Ha...I might check out Nintendo Power for the first time in years. I absolutely refuse to read Play Magazine because I can't stand the overall writing and David Halverson.

Well... I read EGM on occasion, (I've been getting it for quite a while now... even though I haven't paid for it in like, a year)
But, I think this calls for a special moment...

That game over sign...must be the most jolly game over sing I have ever seen in my life.
Times like this remind me of the very first EGM I ever picked up, it had the pic. from sonic adventure 1, I'll never forget it.

First one I read was a long-ass time ago. I think it had a huge story on Genesis vs. SNES. I do remember at least a couple pages about CV Bloodlines. It was my brother's from a couple years prior. Top-notch writing, even about not so top-notch subjects (MK3 and SF:The Movie: The Game or w/e).

I can't believe they're getting rid of Shane and Milky. Shane is just the ultimate hardcore gaming fanboy, arguably the most visible, famous face on the 1UP staff. To get rid of him is almost like getting rid of the site's mascot or its soul.
Milky's firing is a choice that I'm having trouble believing they were stupid enough to make... Look at all the exclusive interviews he got as executive editor of EGM and then EIC of 1UP. It's well known he's got relationships with developers that nobody else in the gaming press seems to have. Not to mention how he spearheaded the production of features you just didn't see anywhere else. (Remember 1UP Cover Stories? Or all those "Day In The Life Of..." features with the old Final Fantasy creators?) The direction he was taking EGM in in recent months is just basically a snapshot of the overall impact he's had on the ZD Game Group over the years. I think letting him go is a big mistake; no doubt 1UP's features will be the worse for it, to say the least.
I don't see Sharkey or Parish on the list... That's a relief at least, Sharkey having a great sense of humor, and Parish being the best writer on the staff.

It seems Shane was planing on leaving this week anyway. He already has a job lined up.

No Milky...

Well, I know Milky's voice will always get out. He's just like that.
