Today, 10 years ago, the Sega Dreamcast launched on 9/9/99. That makes today its tenth anniversary! Give me a "fuck yeah"!
"Fuck yeah!"
Who still has their Dreamcast hooked up? Still plays it often? Favorite game? Best memories?
Let's celebrate 10 years of a console so short lived with a library so chock full of awesome games it makes other consoles with twice the lifespan cry like a faggot.

I still have my Dreamcast hooked up! VGA box even! I remember the days of 100+ matches of Soul Calibur a day! (Pass the controller around!) I remember the last good Sonic game! I also remember my more recently discovered favorite...Space Channel 5...I loves that game...

Fuck Yeah!
Sadly, I never owned a Dreamcast, and had to wait until I bought my Gamecube and PS2 to experince much of what the little magical piece of wonder had to offer (Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi and Skies of Arcadia specifically), but I have fond memories of playing Power Stone, Shemune and Project Justice with friends.
We miss you Sega.

Oh god....the one system I bought mostly due to playing one game that was the rebirth of sonic, SA 1.
But hey, I loved every second of it, and I also bought all the little goodies that made the system that much more worthwhile....such as those VMA's...WHICH COST 40 FREAKIN' BUCKS EACH!!!
Sadly, I was never able to utilize online play....even though I had a couple games that did have the option.
The games that I owned and played the hell out of were Grandia 2, outrigger, crap load of demos, Power stone 1 and 2, sonic adventure 1 and 2, looney toons space race, metropolis street racer (the genesis of PGR), Shenmue 1, air force delta, and others I can't recall.
Besides those titles....there were many others that I did not have the pleasure to play....one of them being jet grind radio....one I saw many times at the store, yet never decided to pickup. Thankfully, the other games such as skies of arcadia, shenmue 2, PSO I and II, and jet set radio future came out on consoles that I owned which still has a beating heart.
So yes, I loved my dreamcast....up to the point of shutdown.

Fuck Yeah!
I have a bunch of emulators for my Dreamcast, so I still play it often.
In the past I used to play Grandia II, Power Stone, Soul Calibur, and Jet Grind Radio.

Never owned one, they were starting a lot of fires when they first came out I recall. All though that had nothing to do with me not owning one, I had N64 and PSX already, we're not made of money damn it.
Also I feel you should have mentioned this is not only the 10th Anniversary of the Dreamcast but it is also National Beatles Day.

This is a Dreamcast topic in gaming, not a Beatles topic in multimedia..
God, I could go on and on about my addiction to PSO that made me do terrible in the 5th grade, or how fucking awesome Jet Grind Radio is, or how the Dreamcast was a fighting game fan's dream, or how much I still love it..
But I haven't enough time in a week to do so. Not even in a month!
Too bad most of my Dreamcast games were stolen. Like my beloved BANGAI-O!

Fuck yeah, Dreamcast.
I never owned, nor played Dreamcast, but I know it was one of the best consoles to date.

FUCK YEAH
I bought the system Day 1, and got the sweet Sega Dreamcast swirl logo t-shirt because I pre-ordered it! I wore that thing till it was in tatters. I remember my friends stopping by my house and playing my Dreamcast while I wasn't even home, because I was the only one who had one. Endless matches of Powerstone 2. One of my all-time favorite games-- Shenmue. Amazing/confusing people with Seaman.
Oooohhhhh such good times.

Oh snap! I forgot to mention Grandia 2, my favorite RPG ever. Thanks for the reminder, ed209.

09-10-2009, 03:28 AM
Yea, Grandia 2 was a title I knew nothing about....yet somehow obtained due to pure luck.
JUST LIKE SHENMUE!!!
And I was just reminded something....I HAD A CRAP LOAD OF FIGHTING TITLES!
SF3 third strike, MVC2, Plasma sword PS 1 and 2....and another I seem to have forgotten.
Sadly, Snk vs C 1 and 2 are not on that list....nor is the last blade, Garou, or Jojo's bizarre adventure.

Shenmue was different for me. I was hyped on it ever since it was announced as "Project Berkeley", the supposed Virtua Fighter RPG.
Also, I snapped up every single mag with anything Dreamcast printed in it. Yeah, I was a fanboy.

A diamond in the rough...as one might say....cause pure dreamcast fanboys were hard to come by those days.
My feeble mind at the time could not even comprehend what was going on in shenmue....the only thought in my mind was "Ryo looks places...finds key item...THEN BEATS THE CRAP OUT OF SOMEONE!!"

Hell yes!
I remember going to a Costco 10 years ago and seeing a Dreamcast on display. If I remember correctly, the game being shown off was NFL 2K. I thought it looked realistic and was amazed at the graphics. There was no game like that before. It was proof that there were sports games outside of Electronic Arts. I don't like sports games, but you get my point.
I got a Dreamcast not long after. I had a number of games for the system, including:
-Sonic Adventure
-Crazy Taxi
-Fur Fighters
-Marvel vs. Capcom 1
-Some sports games that were my older brother's
-Shadowman
I rented games like Seaman, Sonic Shuffle, Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue 1, and some others.
Anyone remember Seaman? It was the one game where you had a weird fish with a human face that you could interact with using a microphone. Anyone who is familiar with Hey You Pikachu for the N64 should know what I'm talking about.
Who here owned a fishing controller for the Dreamcast? If so, did you only use it for the fishing games? I heard about this one dude who used the controller to play as Cervantes in Soul Calibur I. Personally, I never played SC1, but seeing someone pull that off would be awesome to watch.
I still have a bunch of demo discs that came with the Official Dreamcast Magazine. Good times.
The most recent Dreamcast game I've played is Toy Commander. Let me say that the game hasn't aged very well. The controls were way too slippery for me to have any fun. Ugh.
Long live the Dreamcast.

DUDE! :D
I TOTALLY remember Seaman. That game was hysterical!
Had I owned a Dreamcast, I would have gotten it myself. Considering the low price of Dreamcasts these days (and the fact you can just burn games right onto blank CDs...Yay!) I really don't see what's stopping me from getting one now.

Hell yeah I remember Seaman!
A few months ago me and my cousin raised some Seaman to their third stage of development and accidentally waited to long to check in on them and they all died! I had to listen to Leonard Nimoy chew me out for like 10 minutes!
GlassAdam

Yup, I loved Seaman. I never made it past the sort-of adult stage, though. He never grew legs or anything. :( Like Heiae, I always forgot to do my part and the poor Seaman died.
Actually, I shouldn't say "poor." My Seamen Seamans always turned out to be complete assholes.

Would anyone be interested in a copy of Space Channel 5? I'm terrible at music games and I know that I'll eternally suck at that game. I could spend time to get better at it, but I don't think I'll do it.
I don't have it with me right now, so you have time to think about it.
I'd like to start a roundtable discussion on Foxkei right now.
The Dreamcast controller. What do you think of it?
GlassAdam

I sucked terribly at Space Channel 5. No matter how spot-on I thought I was with the timing, the game always seemed to screw me over! Basically I guess I just wasn't any good. I normally have rhythm, but not with that game.
As for the DC controller, I was a fan, though 2 analog sticks would have made it perfect. I have big hands (long fingers, actually), so the large size of the controller was perfect for me.

I love the Dreamcast controller too. Funny how Microsoft took it and pretty much perfected it with the Controller S and 360 controllers. I love the 360 controller, sans D-pad. Ever noticed how similar the designs are?

I can't say I ever did, actually. I always thought that the Dreamcast Controller was closer to the N64 controller.
The Dreamcast controller wasn't nearly as uncomfortable, but I felt it was certainly very awkward. BTW...what was the purpose of the screen on it again?

I always felt the Dreamcast controller was a bit too big. Especially the top, it wasn't always comfortable to use toe top buttons. It isn't a big deal beause it never caused any huge problems while playing, just a minor complaint. I also never liked how the cord was on the bottom. They made it that way so the vmu could come up from the top, but thought it would be better the other way around.

Yeah, but at least they kinda compromised on the cord thing-- you could draw the cord back up and push it into the little notch on the back behind the VMU slots so it still felt like the cord was coming out of the top.

True. Its not a big deal, and they were smart enough to deal with it.
I'm a big fan of Berserk, and I know there was a Berserk game for the Dreamcast, but I never played it. Have any of you played it, and if so is it good? I'm tempted to go on ebay and buy it...

Sword of the Berserk. It's based on the manga and takes place well after the arc the anime adaptation covers. That's why you see Puck the fairy tag along with Guts. I've never played the game or have caught up with the manga, but I've heard good things about the game. It's one of the better games based on a manga.
I loved the Dreamcast controller at the time, but my opinion about it has gone down when I recently pulled out my Dreamcast and played some games not too long ago. The analog stick feels a bit off and the controller feels awfully light without the VMU.
GlassAdam, I'm the same way with Space Channel 5. I always felt my timing was off and I would always think that I barely made it through sequences most of the time. That can explain why I can't get into that game.

I have never minded the Dreamcast controller. It's bit on the bulky side, but its still easier to use than that blasted N64 controller. What the hell was Nintendo thinking?

I've not played it, but if I'm not mistaken it's basically Diablo. So that's up to you. I've been tempted to find it...that and the Record of Lodoss War game...which I think was also a Diablo clone.
...Huh.

One of the oddest controllers that Nintendo made, but there were worse controllers.
Like the Xbox big.
How about the NES controller for giving you cramps after extended play time? You heard me.

Huge Dreamcast fan here. Hell, I have over a hundred Dreamcast games. I started playing Shenmue again. Some weird bug happened at the beginning of the game. It's hard to explain, but basically all the walls inside Ryo's house weren't rendered so I was able to see through them. First time that has ever happened to me. But the game corrected itself once I left the house and went back in.

Dreamcast was a wonderful console. I remember it fondly and was dissapointed when Sega announced that it would be its last console. With it, went the innovation and great games
that defined the brand. The 3rd party stuff they makes these days pales in comparisom.
The Dreamcast was also the first console to have games that u could play online. I ll never forget the first time i tried Quake 3. It was my first exp playing videogames with other human players and let me tell u...it was a revelation. We take it for granted with what xbox live has achieved today but Sega also accomplished great things back then...especially with the limitations of dial up gaming. I believe i had 56k speeds at the time and i rarely ever had lag.
I still feel short changed that the Sega Dreamcast didnt live up to its potential. Perhaps if it had been a success, we d have four consoles on the market now but in some way it lives on in the 360. Reading this post makes me want to buy a Dreamcast from ebay and play Ikaruga one last time.
