Everyone needs a break from excess emotion sometimes. I find that when I am really angry or exceptionally depressed, I don't quite know how to tone it down. I tend to dwell on whatever it is that put me in that mood and it's really hard to get out of it.

READING DOES NOT WORK WHEN YOU'RE ANGRY.
Believe me, I've tried.
I must have read the same page about 3 times and not known what I read before I finally gave up. I did call a friend and talk for a little while which helped seeing as how I'm not much of a phone person. So as far as anger is concerned... reading = bad; phone a friend = good.

Be sure to share with the rest of us your remedies for excessive emotion. :)

Gaming.

Not that I've ever been that angry or emotional, but gaming in general takes my mind off things.

For me all the time, it's Peaceful, calming music, such as Final Fantasy, Classical mostly, even some Inspirational, Worship, some New Age music is calming as hell.

Alcohol.

Not really, it'll screw you up even more, especially if you're the talkative drunk (you'll end up saying things you'll want to take back in the morning).

But more often than not, listening to loud rock music, while doing some sit-ups or practicing some kicks/punches calm me down.

Ha! I'd like to state for the record that reading absolutely works for me!!! In fact, during "times of excessive emotion", as you put it, I seem to get a surprisingly large amount of reading done... Strange. Maybe you just need the right book.

I'm 100% jealous. Reading calms you down when your mad? I can't focus on the story when I'm mad. I keep thinking about what's bothering me although I continue to read, It kinda just goes in one eye and out the other. In fact, when I'm mad I feel like this:

Haha well I know what you mean. Of course I do have to work to clear my mind at least a little before I can do any angry reading, but for me it is possible and helpful. If the story is engrossing, I could read in almost any condition, I suppose. Other moods where I get a lot of reading done: anxious, hermit-like, or lovesick.

in disgaea 2, Crusherboy is my win button.

Rush Hour (one of his special attacks) annihilates everyone in a 3x3 grid. It's delicious overkill, and the sheer power of the thing makes my day brighter. It represents that I've accomplished something in my life; I have made a character very few who played the game could hope to stop.

Unless they have a wood golem too.

When I'm mad...I do one of three things...

1.) Internalize it....

2.) Lash out at people who don't deserve it...

3.) Dump all my problems on a couple of people through the anonymity of the internet...

I usually take a walk, play a game that doesn't make me angry, or find someone I can talk to. Getting into a car and driving is the worst thing you can do in that situation.
