Seems the character limit for threat titles has been reduced since the change to Foxkei 3.0. I was going to call my journal "SnakeEyez does stuff and writes about it" like it was on the old site, but that name was too long. Curses.
Anyway, I've been pretty busy today. I spend the early afternoon tying up all the loose ends for school before classes begin on Monday -- getting my folders organized, printing out my schedule, consulting the campus map so I'll know where the heck I'm going, and things of that nature. I will be taking two classes this semester: Autobiography & Confession and 20th Century American Literature. Wish me luck.
I also took a trip out to Target because I needed a few things. One of those things was a 365-day calendar, but for the life of me, I could not find where they kept the calendars. I looked all over that store, but they were nowhere to be found. Crud. I guess I can live without one this year.
On the way home, I encountered another grind-my-gears situation. Have you ever run into an ambulance or a police car on the road that abused its sirens just so it can avoid traffic? I can't stand it when they do that. I was driving along when an ambulance pulls onto the road behind me and immediately flips on its lights and sirens. Naturally, I pull over to get out of the way, but as soon as it passes me, it turns the lights and sirens off and continues to drive on like normal. Way to abuse your power, asshole.

Because of the theme we are using, we can't have the titles to be too long. It would mess-up the theme.
Two classes, eh? But I bet you got a lot of readings for each class~ Good luck.
Funny, I just saw two ambulances today.

Yeah, grad school classes are a lot more intensive than the undergrad stuff. Two grad school classes would be roughly equivalent to four undergraduate classes. When you work full-time like I do, two is pretty much all you can handle per semester. I would be out of my freaking mind if I tried to take three classes and work 40 hours a week.

I couldn't think of the guy who wrote Of Mice and Men, and I didn't want to look like a deuche so I just threw him in there. I dunno why his stuff was (and still is) so popular, but I can say Goosebumps sold like hotcakes, man. Like hotcakes.

The Spring semester started on Monday, so things have been kind of busy this week. The good news? I only have to go to class twice a week. The bad news? I only go to class twice a week. I signed up for two once-a-week classes, which means each class meeting is three hours long (right after eight hours at work, by the way). Mondays and Thursdays are going to suck for the next couple months.
I showed up to my first class on Monday, only to find that my bike was missing. See, I park my car in the infamous Lot 18, which is about a mile and a half away from the main campus. That's a long walk. To expedite that long journey, I just ride my bike between the parking lot and my classes.
Last year, I left my bike in one of the bike racks over the summer because I didn't feel like trying to cram it into the trunk of my car, driving home, and keeping it in my apartment for three months; that's way more trouble than it's worth. When I returned to school for the Fall semester, I found that the bike racks were empty. I eventually learned that the campus police go around and collect all the bikes over the Summer break, and if no one comes to claim them, they get auctioned off. I got my bike back, but I could have sworn that the officer I spoke with said they only do that over Summer break. That's why I figured it would be okay to leave it there over Christmas break. Guess not, though.
So now I have to go retrieve my bike from them again. Unfortunately, their office closes at 4 p.m., and I work later than that. They open at 7:30 a.m., though, which means I'll just have to visit them before I go to work tomorrow. I am not looking forward to that. I am definitely not a morning person....
I also need to get a parking permit. I don't know why they'd want to give out tickets for Lot 18 since nobody wants to park there, but I'm not taking any chances.
On the plus side, my professor for 20th Century American Literature (which holds its first meeting tomorrow night) had the decency to e-mail us the reading list over Christmas break, so I had time to order my textbooks from Amazon at a much lower price than I would have paid for them at the campus bookstore.

You want to know what's ass? Let me tell you what's ass: someone stole my bike over Christmas break. Now that, my friends, is ass. That's as assy as it gets.
See, I went to the security office this morning before work to retrieve my bike, only to have the receptionist tell me that they only collect bikes over Summer break; as I originally thought, they don't do it over Christmas break. I told her that I had left it near Lot 18 and she informed me that I was the third person who had come to report a missing bike near that particular parking lot. Someone must have gone "Christmas shopping" there with a pair of bolt cutters over the break.
So yeah, now I'm without a bike, and it takes a good 15-20 minutes for me to walk between the parking lot and my classes. I liked that bike too. That was a graduation present when I graduated from high school. There are a lot of memories in that bike.
I'm going to call the police tomorrow and see if I can file a report. I doubt anything will ever come of it, but at least it will make me feel better.

My toilet exploded this morning while I was getting ready for work. When I flushed it after the standard early-morning pee, a ridiculous amount of water came gushing out of the bottom of it. Yes, the bottom -- like, where the toilet meets the floor. I didn't even know there was a gap there, but apparently there is. I eventually got it to stop by twisting that metal knob thing that sticks out of the wall, but not before my bathroom became completely flooded.
I had to call work and let them know that I'd be an hour late today while I cleaned up this mess. I just had to sop up all the water with a rag bit by bit. It took as long as you'd expect it to. After that, I had to dry and sanitize everything it touched because it's groty toilet water and it's full of germs.
I filled out a maintenance request at the main office before I left for work/class. It seems to work fine now, so I guess they fixed whatever the problem was. At least, I hope they did....
That was a rather unpleasant way to start my morning, lemme tell ya.
AmuroRay
01-30-2009, 02:31 AM
Unpleasant of course it is, especially if it leaks at the bottom, with dirty water +5/seconds rad. That, is new for me.
No mop of sort in your place? Doing it by rag is a pain.
SnakeEyez
01-30-2009, 02:32 AM
Nope, no mop. I didn't think I'd ever need one before today since the floors are never dirty enough to warrant mopping them. After this little incident, though, I guess it couldn't hurt to buy one.

So you guys do web design, right? Like professional jobs?
Yep. We make websites for small businesses in the US and Canada. These business owners give us a call, say "Hey, I want a website for my business," we we make them. There are several stages to it.
Stage 1 - We interview them to obtain all the information they want us to put on their website. Sometimes the sites are small one-page deals, but sometimes they're big five-page sites.
Stage 2 - All that info gets sent to the copywriting team; this is where I work. It's our job to take that big messy block of random information and shape it into meaningful descriptions, paragraphs, and sentences. We decide how many pages the site needs depending on the amount of info we've received and write an appropriate amount of copy for those pages. When we're done, we send it to the design team.
Stage 3 - The design team is comprised of the artistic people who actually construct the web pages. They change fonts, add colors, insert pictures, and do all that good stuff to make the site visually appealing. Then they just copy and paste all of the text that my team has written and send it off to the next stage.
Stage 4 - Quality control. They look over everything to make sure we didn't make any mistakes. If we mess up, they send it back to us to fix the problems. Once it's perfect, it's sent to the mysterious final stage.
Stage 5 - The technology wizards use their magic to turn the site we've created into an actual website. They input SEO stuff and release it onto the Internet for the whole world to see. This step mystifies me because I know nothing about computers.
If all goes well, the customer likes it and they pay us a certain amount each month to keep their website in operation.
That's what I do at work, basically. I write the text for business websites. Here's an example of a site I worked on: http://elegantdesignsbridal.com/index.html

Well, I just signed a new one-year contract with my apartment complex. I'm still not a huge fan of this place, but I'm going to continue living here because it is dirt cheap. Plus, they had an incentive in place for returning occupants: sign a one-year lease before March 13th (today) and receive a $70 allowance on utilities each month. Basically, if my utilities for the month cost, say, $85, then I only have to pay $15 and they'll cover the remaining $70. If my utilities are less than $70, then I just plain don't have to pay utilities for that month. Apply that to the whole year and I'll be saving up to $840. Hell yeah.

I'm really getting frustrated with my job. I found out today that my floor manager is disappointed in me because I "leave early every day." Well, that's news to me. Leaving at 5 p.m. is too early now? Working from 9 to 5 isn't good enough now? Apparently not. Since I have to take 30 minutes for lunch, that means I'm only clocked in for 7.5 hours per day. In other words, they want me to stay until 5:30 p.m. every day so I can get in a full 8 hours of work.
Now normally I wouldn't object since that's not a huge amount of time, but I'm still in school, damn it. I have homework to do. I have books to read. I have essays to write. I need those extra three or four hours every week -- and I've explained as much to my managers before. I've told them that I can easily work 40 hours a week during summer and winter break, but once school begins, I can't commit to more than 35 or 36 hours a week. You only need to be working a minimum of 32 hours a week to be considered a full-time employee, so I don't see what the problem is. Why do I need to be there a full 40 hours a week every single week? We've actually been pretty slow lately, so it's not like we're swamped and we need the extra manpower or anything.
I just don't get it. :(

Stupid Managers...
They wanna maximize the amount of work they get out of you. Have you gotten any raises or anything since being there?
Now...when you say you found out that he is disappointed in you. So he didn't tell you I take it? You heard it form someone else? If so..it may not be true...but if it is...what kinda sissy manager do you have that can't talk to you himself?
You do your job well right? I dunno what the rules as far as termination goes in Florida are...(In Colorado you can be terminated for any reason outside of disabilities or discrimination. You employer doesn't even have to tell you why. But he can fire you...because he doesn't like you...and there isn't anything you can really do)

Stupid Managers...
They wanna maximize the amount of work they get out of you. Have you gotten any raises or anything since being there?
Nope. Nobody gets raises here. There are copywriters who have been working there for four years and are still making the same hourly wage they started out with. See, we get a commission on our paychecks that is determined by how many sites we make during the pay period (usually anywhere between $50 and $150). This commission is in addition to our hourly wage. Their logic is basically: "You want to make more money, huh? Work harder, make more sites, and get a better commission." That's why they won't give the employees raises.
Now...when you say you found out that he is disappointed in you. So he didn't tell you I take it? You heard it form someone else? If so..it may not be true...but if it is...what kinda sissy manager do you have that can't talk to you himself?
He sent out an e-mail to the whole team pointing out a few so-called issues that he's noticed lately (among them, certain unnamed employees leaving early without permission). Then my immediate manager confronted me about it today and I learned what the problem was from her.
You do your job well right? I dunno what the rules as far as termination goes in Florida are...(In Colorado you can be terminated for any reason outside of disabilities or discrimination. You employer doesn't even have to tell you why. But he can fire you...because he doesn't like you...and there isn't anything you can really do)
Yeah, it's basically the same here. We can be terminated at any time for any reason aside from discrimination or whatever. I'd like to think I've earned a good reputation in the year I've been there, but you never know.

I am in the market for a part time job. I am taking 12 credit hours now, but will be taking 19 in the Fall (here comes the pain).
With four of us spiltting the rent, it makes it easy. I don't have to work more than 20-30 hours a week. If I take the job at the shelter it would be full time and overnight, but I would never have to drive to work as its only a mile away or so. Decisions, decisions...
Best of luck to you SE. School and work suck sometimes, but I hope you get the job you want when your done.

Well, I've got some bad news. It turns out that my computer is in dire straits right now. After a bit of assistance from resident computer guru AlucardsFate, I have learned that there is a flaw in the brand of laptop I'm using. It's having trouble turning on, you see. Oftentimes when I try to turn it on, it will boot up like normal but display a blank screen. Other times it will freeze during the booting-up process, forcing me to restart it. Other times it will boot up for a few seconds, shut off, turn back on and boot for a few seconds, shut off again, and repeat the process ad nauseum until I just shut it off myself.
Needless to say, it's very frustrating and it can sometimes take up to 30 or 45 minutes just to turn my computer on. One of these days I'm afraid that it just isn't going to turn on at all.
Luckily, though, since this problem is inherent to the system, HP is offering to repair it for free. The bad news? By "repair," they really mean "delete everything and install a brand new motherboard." So for all intents and purposes, they're going to be sending me back a brand new computer with virtually nothing on it. Goodie.
Anyway, I have to ship it to their warehouse on Monday and my roommate is moving out over the weekend, so my home will be computer-free for about two weeks. I'll still be able to pop in while I'm at work, but I won't be able to spend long amounts of time on here.
So yeah, just wanted to give everyone a heads-up that I'll be scarce for a little while. Don't burn the place down while I'm gone, alright?

...and I'm back. Jubilation.
As expected, my computer has been wiped clean, so I'm sitting here trying to re-install everything. It's going to take a long time before my computer is back to the way it used to be. I just tried to re-download Norton 360. They give me three downloads with my subscription, but since I've only used one of them, I still have two free downloads left. I decided to use one of them and they charged me full price for it. Goddamnit. I'll have to call 'em tomorrow when I get home from work to straighten out this mess.
My roommate moved out over the weekend. Within two hours, my new roomie was here already. His name is Manny and he's huge. Dude looks like a bodybuilder, but he's a cool guy. He's as much of a neat freak as I am, so at least I won't have to worry about cleaning up after him all the time. We're getting along just fine, so no worries there.
I finally got around to beating Persona 3 while I was away. It ended up taking me a little over 116 hours, shattering my old record of 101 hours with Dragon Quest VIII. I wasn't expecting it to last all summer, but hey, I'm not complaining. I still have to get through The Answer, though.
That's about it. It's good to have steady Internet access again.

Busy day.
The end of the semester is approaching (I've got one final essay due on Monday and one due on Tuesday), so I put some of my PTO to good use at work. I have off tomorrow and Friday, and I also requested a half-day today. Somehow our customers caught wind of this and decided to make that 4-hour period as miserable for me as possible by sending a slew of large and cumbersome sites in my direction. Bastards. I extricated myself from the mess at around 1:15 p.m. and got the heck out of there before anything else could come up and demand my attention.
Then I drove to Midas for my 2 p.m. appointment. It's time for my 90,000 mile maintenance and I also need a new valve cover gasket since mine is leaking oil. I dropped off my car, walked over to the movie theater across the street, and saw Tim Burton's remake of Alice and Wonderland. It was awesome, as expected. The CGI was excellent. The best part is that I was literally the only person in the theater watching it. I know movie theaters aren't exactly overflowing with patrons at 2 p.m. on a Wednesday, but even so, I figured there would be a smattering of people in there. Nope. Just me. That was pretty cool having the theater to myself.
Once the movie was over, I hoofed it back over to Midas to pick up my car. The whole thing ended up costing me about $320, but at least I (hopefully) won't have to worry about spending that much on my car for another 30,000 miles.
Then I took a trip over to my university's library and checked out some books -- hopefully the last batch of books I'll need this semester. I just got home and had some dinner. Now I'm off to do some research for the rest of the night. Fun times.

Here's a brief status update for all my adoring fans.
I spent Memorial Day weekend moving into my new apartment. It took a while, but I finally got everything squared away...except for the most important thing, of course: Internet. AT&T royally f**ked me over and I'm trying to get everything resolved. I'm posting this from work and likely won't be online regularly until early next week -- hopefully no later than Monday or Tuesday. Nutballs.
The deadline for the character submissions in the tourneys has been extended until next Tuesday. The poll for the Best Sig contest will close automatically, so once I get back online, I'll resolve that as well.
If you're wondering why my status is currently set to "Angry," it's because Foxkei does not have a "Furious" status. My immature bitch of a sister crossed the line on Sunday, and now she is dead to me. I may expound upon this matter at a later date...or I may not. That's all that needs to be said at the moment.
This is SnakeEyez, signing out.

Lats night was 10-10-10, the date of TNA Bound for Glory in Daytona Beach. If you're not a wrestling fan, TNA is basically the #2 pro wrestling organization in the US -- the WWE being #1, of course. WWE has all the popular guys you've heard of before while TNA has...everyone else. Anyway, Bound for Glory is their biggest Pay-Per-View of the year, and since it was being held in my hometown of Daytona this year, I figured I would check it out with my dad. Ta-da. This is where most sporting events in Daytona take place. This is also where my high school graduation was held.
We made our way inside and stood among the crowd of people. There were no lines or anything -- just a big ol' clump of fans waiting to get in. It was pretty disorganized, but luckily we didn't have to wait too long.
As we were waiting, I head a familiar overly-enthusiastic voice nearby shouting, "Five more minutes! The doors will open in just five more minutes! While you're waiting, why not buy some of our incredible TNA merchandise? Collector Team 3D T-shirts! Handy TNA tote bags! We've got DVDs and posters that will make great souvenirs for this historic occasion. They're selling fast, folks! These deals won't last!"
Yup, it was Don West.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/SnakeEyez8/DonWest.jpg
"These collectible TNA Bound for Glory Posters are only $75 apiece, and they've been signed by Jeff Jarret, Mr. Anderson, Kurt Angle, and Sting! We only have 100 of these to give to those lucky fans who wish to own a keepsake of this momentous occasion! Your life is not complete unless you own one of these posters! You will never be a complete human being without one of these incredible posters hanging on your wall!"
Don West was out hamming it up and mingling with the crowd before the show, which I thought was pretty cool. Once the doors opened and we got into the arena, he would periodically come out to the ring to encourage us to hit up the merchandise booth before the show got underway.
We had seats on the opposite end of the entrance area, so as the wrestlers came out, they would walk toward us. I thought I ordered some pretty good tickets, but hot damn, they were even better than I expected. We were on a raised area about five or six rows away from the front row. The ring was literally about 20 feet away. We were right there in the thick of things.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/SnakeEyez8/OceanCenterinterior.jpg
Somewhere around here.
A few minutes before showtime, I hear somebody nearby say, "Hey, isn't that Dixie Carter?" I look up and BAM -- Dixie Carter. She was going around greeting the fans and thanking everyone for coming to the show. I got to shake her hand and say hello, which was pretty cool.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/SnakeEyez8/DixeCarterandtheHulkster.jpg
Dixie Carter is basically the Vince McMahon of TNA. She owns the company.
Once 8:00 p.m. rolled around, it was showtime. We started off with Generation Me attempting to win the TNA tag team championships from my favorite tag team in the whole wide world, the Motor City Machine Guns.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/SnakeEyez8/MCMG.jpg
Seriously, these guys are awesome.
These two teams put on a hell of a show. The match was very fast-paced from beginning to end, with tons of high spots to keep the crowd entertained. We remained seated for all of maybe two minutes. Everyone was on their feet after that and stayed that way until the very end. Great way to open up the PPV. The Guns successfully defended their titles, so I was thrilled about that.
After that was the fatal four-way match for the Knockouts Title featuring Angelina Love, Velvet Sky, Madison Rayne, and Tara. Well, it wasn't exactly a fatal four-way. Two of the ladies wrestled at a time while the other two waited on the apron. They could tag in and out, but since there were no teams, they could tag anybody. Of course, they didn't bother explaining this beforehand, so everyone in my area was a bit confused about it at first. Typical "different just for the sake of being different" TNA booking. Anyway, it wasn't a bad match, and the crowd was mostly into it since they were still pumped about the preceding tag match. Tara won the Knockouts Titles (again...ugh), and Madison got punched out by guest referee Mickie James after the match. Oh, and Velvet Sky is ten times hotter in person.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/SnakeEyez8/VelvetSky.jpg
Man, it was really tough finding pictures of her on Google. Oh wait, no it wasn't.
The next match was Ink Inc. vs. Eric Young and Orlando Jordan. I wasn't expecting much from this match since it was just thrown onto the card the week before the PPV, but it was actually pretty entertaining. Eric Young was really goofy throughout the contest -- impersonating the referee, giving Ink Inc. high-fives every time they hit a big move on Jordan, and even trying to wrestle Jordan at one point. My dad was laughing at Young's shenanigans the whole time. He later told me that this was his favorite match of the show.
The X-Division Title match was next between champion Jay Lethal and challenger Douglas Williams. Good back-and-forth match between these two. The crowd was actually pretty evenly split, with competing "Let's go Lethal/Let's go Williams" chants throughout the match. Lethal ended up retaining the title and heading out into the crowd to celebrate, only to be attacked by the Jersey Shore ripoff wrestler that debuted last week. He cut a promo afterward, danced a douchey little dance, and strutted off while the crowd booed. A guy in the front row was holding up a sign that said "*Cornette Face*" during all this, a reference to a running joke on Botchamania (http://botchamania.com/) where a picture of a stupefied Jim Cornette is posted every time TNA does something retarded (which is at least once or twice per show).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/SnakeEyez8/CornetteFace.jpg
"...fuck this company."
Abyss vs. Rob Van Dam was up next. As expected, it was brutal and violent, with plenty of chair shots and barbed wire spots throughout the match. RVD was incredibly popular with the crowd. This was another match where we were on our feet the whole time. RVD eventually got the win over Abyss in a somewhat short but good match. Interesting to note is that a group nearby had three big signs that said "Ten Ten Ten" (the date of the event and Abyss' mantra for the past few weeks), except the "N" was replaced by the WWE's Nexus logo.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/SnakeEyez8/Nexus.png
Could Nexus be planning to invade TNA? ...nah.
Next was the tag team handicap match -- Jeff Jarrett and Samoa Joe vs. Sting, Kevin Nash, and "The Pope" D'Angelo Dinero. Joe and Dinero carried most of the match, with Nash and Sting wrestling sparingly to avoid breaking their brittle old man hips. I began to suspect that something was up when I realized that Joe had wrestled the entire match without tagging in Jarrett even once. I smelled a double-cross from Jarrett, and sure enough, that's what happened. Joe went for the hot tag and Jarrett left him hanging by walking out on the match. Joe was summarily pounded into the ground by his three adversaries, with Nash hitting a rather impressive-looking powerbomb on the huge 280-pound Samoan guy for the win.
Up next was the Lethal Lockdown steel cage match. While the viewers at home were watching video packages and interviews hyping the big match, the production crew was assembling the cage. Unlike the WWE cage, which just hangs over the ring the entire show and is then lowered into place, the TNA cage was wheeled out from the stands in four separate pieces. The pieces were propped up on each side of the ring and locked into place by the stage hands. They managed to get that big cage set up in just a few minutes.
The Lethal Lockdown match was great. Lots of really exciting moments and copious amounts of violence. At least half the participants were bleeding before all was said and done. Tommy Dreamer in particular looked to be in pretty bad shape, but he soldiered on. Pretty awesome moment near the end saw Raven and Matt Morgan just beating the ever-loving snot out of each other with a trash can lid and a kendo stick. Kazarian and Stevie Richards climbed up to the top of the cage to do some suicidal spot and Brian Kendrick popped up out of nowhere to throw Kazarian through a table. He was already up there hiding under a tarp or something, but there were no opportunities throughout the show for him to actually get up there. He must have been hiding on top of the cage ceiling since before the show even began. Now that's devotion. When all was said and done, Tommy Dreamer's team won. Bah! Even worse, AJ Styles (my favorite wrestler) was the one who got pinned. Double bah!
The ring crew disassembled the cage and it was onward to the main event -- Kurt Angle vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Mr. Anderson for the TNA Title. All three guys had fans in the crowd, with one hyperactive teeny-bopper behind me screaming her foolish head off every time Jeff so much as glanced in our direction.
The big epic swerve at the end was Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff helping Jeff Hardy win the TNA title. Woo. Exciting. Not really. The ending was pretty lame, but at least it was fun seeing the crowd throw trash in the ring. Hogan and Bischoff got nailed by a few bottles here and there but Hardy managed to remain relatively unscathed. We skedaddled while Hardy and company were still celebrating in the ring.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how entertaining the show was. I was expecting the worst since TNA has been progressively becoming more and more unwatchable over the past few months, but I really enjoyed myself. Good show. Glad I went.

As far as the twist at the end? This COULD be good, if properly maneuvered. But since Vince Russo is writing that show...I doubt it will be. Oh well. At least you had fun!

Oh, I love Daffney too, dude. Maybe not as much as you, but she's one of my favorite female wrestlers today. I'd sure like to actually see her wrestle every now and then, though. Sheesh.

December 3rd, 2010
Eventful day today. I took my car to the Toyota dealership this morning so they could fix my door handle. It ended up costing more than they originally quoted me, which is ass. Then my parents came up to visit in the afternoon. They said they felt bad about me missing Thanksgiving this year, so we went to Sam's Club and they bought me a crapload of food. That was nice of them. It made me feel better about the overpriced car door repair, that's for sure. I have a freezer full of frozen tilapia and salmon (I don't buy fish normally because it's so expensive) and a fridge full of grapes, fresh pineapple, salad, bagels, and a whole bunch of other goodies. As anyone who has ever shopped at Sam's will readily attest, they do not do "small." They sell everything in bulk.
We went to Bahama Breeze for dinner, had some delicious Caribbean food, and discussed Christmas plans. My mom has not yet seen my apartment, so she got the grand tour as well. My parents know nothing of anime, so explaining where my wall scroll and figurines came from was interesting. She even admitted that my Boa Hancock figurine was sexy.
So yeah, fun day. My mom and I have been at odds for a while, but I think things are on the mend. My horrible waste-of-flesh half-sister, on the other hand, is going to get a heaping helping of righteous fury if she antagonizes me during the yearly Christmas Eve party in a few weeks. We'll see how that goes.

Then I came home and got a call from my mom. Apparently my dad has prostate cancer.
...oh.
On the one hand, prostate cancer is one of the less life-threatening types of cancer out there, so it's unlikely he's going to die from it or anything. On the other hand, it's cancer. No good can ever come of that. I hope he'll be okay.

Early enough, thankfully. The way my mom explained it, once prostate cancer develops to a certain stage, they can just remove the prostate altogether and he'll be fine. It hasn't reached that stage yet. His doctors are going to monitor it for a while, and once it reaches that point, they'll be able to operate and fix it.
...that's the best-case scenario, of course. Any number of things could go wrong between now and then.

I goofed up big time.
I got a jury duty summons in the mail today. That's not the problem, though, The problem is that it showed up in my mom's mailbox...in Daytona Beach. Over an hour away. Because I still have my parents' home address on my driver's license. Because I forgot to update the address on my driver's license when I moved out. Because I am a doofus.
She's mailing it to me, but the court date is July 18th. That's right around the freaking corner. I need to fill out the part at the bottom of the form saying that I can't attend because I no longer live in the county and mail it back to them...all within the next two weeks or so.
Best-Case Scenario: The postal service kicks ass, I get that form back to them on time, I avoid having to do jury duty in Daytona, and I take a trip to the DMV to update my license.
Worst-Case Scenario: It doesn't reach them in time and I have to attend jury duty sessions for God-knows-how-long in a courtroom that's almost 100 miles away in another county. And I also go to the DMV to update my license.
Worser-Than-Worst-Case Scenario: Something happens to the summons along the way, they don't receive the form in time, and I get fined for missing jury duty and/or carrying around a driver's license that is years out of date. And I still have to go to the DMV to update my license.
My fingers have never been crossed tighter than they are right now.

My coworkers are frigging retarded.
Every day around 4:30 or 5:00 p.m., the sun starts to set, it gets dark inside the office, and I go turn the lights on so I can see what I'm doing. If I don't turn the lights on, my eyes start to hurt because that's what happens when you try to use a computer in a dark room. Sometimes when I turn the lights on, I can hear grumbling from various mole people in the vicinity who think light is evil and prefer to ruin their eyesight working in darkness, but I usually just ignore them, go back to my desk, and continue my job in a pleasantly well-lit area.
Not today, though. 4:30 p.m. rolls around, I turn the lights on, and go back to my desk like I usually do. About five minutes later, someone turns the lights back off and plunges the entire room into darkness. I wait a minute or two, get back up, and go to turn the lights back on. As I have my fingers on the switch, some fat bitch I've never seen before waddles up to me and starts barking at me about how the lights give her "migraine headaches" and how she has to be here for another hour and a half and how I'm going to stop turning the lights off because she said so.
Fat Bitch proceeds to point out that I don't need to turn the lights on since I sit near the window (not that that makes a bit of difference when it's cloudy out) and I have a lamp at my desk (which is true, but it's not enough strong to adequately illuminate my work area). When she's done with her spiel, Fat Bitch trundles off to her desk before I can explain that I turn the lights on every day so I can see what I'm doing. I have bad eyesight, and working in darkness is only making it worse. I get eye strain and I can't see what the hell I'm doing when the sun sets.
My supervisor said I could go home early while he sorted the issue out. He suggested moving me to another desk next week, but I'm going to decline. I like my desk. I'm also going to continue turning on the lights when it gets dark whether Fat Bitch likes it or not. I'm not going to ruin my eyesight by working in darkness just to appease one over-sensitive and over-fed mole person who gets "migraine headaches" from working in a properly lit area. The lights aren't overly bright or anything. They're just run-of-the-mill overhead fluorescent lights. Should the entire team really ruin their eyesight working in darkness just because one person wants them off?
This whole situation is retarded. I can't believe it has even developed into a "situation." They're lights, for fuck's sake. You turn them on when it gets dark so you can see what you're doing. Why is this a problem? Why is this a thing that I have to worry about?
Starting next week, Fat Bitch and I are going to battle. I am sure of it.

Starting next week, Fat Bitch and I are going to battle. I am sure of it.
Wait, if she gets migraine headaches from lights, how is she able to work when the sun is out?

Final verdict: Management has given me its blessing to turn the lights on at the end of the day, and anybody who objects to the lights being turned on can just deal with it. Common sense wins the day!
That's a load off my shoulders. One less thing I have to fight with my coworkers about every day.

The first blow has been struck against the mole people of Florida! Next time, bring soap, the mole-person's natural enemy...

I was going to suggest the next time she ran her mouth to tell her to bring in sunglasses, but yea, how does she work with the sun out? I thought fluorescent lights helped people with headaches/migraines?

That's exactly what I was thinking! I was going to take a trip to Target or something after work and buy her a pair of cheap-as-free sunglasses. If that didn't work, I was going to suggest that she build a little cubicle tent using an old blanket and some clothespins.
I really have no idea how a person can get "migraine headaches" from working in a well-lit room for an hour and a half. If you're that sensitive to light, how do you even get through a sunny day without bursting into flames? This is Florida, for goodness sake. It's sunny here. The state's nickname is The Sunshine State. How...just...how?
People confuse me so much sometimes.

Why did this post make me think of ZZTop? and I LOVE the cubicle tent idea. No I don't have a cubicle, but I have a huge ass desk with a shelf on it, a blanket in my car, these monster-sized binder and alligator clips. YES! Thanks for the idea:)
As for the whole sunshine/headache thing, that really doesn't make any sense. I'm like you dude, people confuse the shit out of me..

Just received an e-mail confirmation that one of my students loans has been successfully paid off. "Paid in full" are perhaps the three most beautiful words in the English language right now.
That's two students loans down, one to go! The last one is a big ol' bastard, though, so it's going to be stuck with me for a few more years. But hey, it's only one loan. I don't have to worry about making two separate loan payments every month, which means I should have a bit more spending money available now. That is a good thing. Money is a good thing.

Yes, and congrats on getting your loans paid off:) I have to agree "paid in full" are very beautiful words, regardless of what it is you are paying off.
