Similar to the Chapter One thread in Multimedia, only we talk about manga we recently read.
I'm now reading Trigun Maximum 7, which I'm liking so far. My only gripe about titles published by Dark Horse / Digital Manga Publishing (DMP) is that they leave the SFX untranslated. That's only a minor problem. Trigun is always easy for me to read compared to some other manga, like Negima (which I didn't like) and Death Note (which I like what I've read so far).
I tend to read manga at a slow pace because I try to limit myself to buying three to four volumes at a time. It's why I haven't been caught up for a lot of the titles I'm following.

man, my friend can read a pretty long book of manga in less than 15 mins. or so...he's just way too damn fast.
Anyways, been reading REC, an awesome slice of life manga, and some good old Buddha.

I'm mad at Bleach.
Bought the first 21 volumes and was hoping it would end there, but they stretched it out.
That's why I'm hating on it.

I'm reading Neon Genesis Evangelion 11, the equivalent of episode 24 of the anime.

I can understand that. But it is a very popular shounen. They rarely end so early.
While the whole Hueco Mundo arc has been mostly lackluster, the introduction of the Vizards and Arrancar was at least pretty cool. Well, specifically the Vizards. They're really unique characters and have a past linked directly to a certain former captain that was revealed in one what I consider one of the best arcs of the series, "Turn Back the Pendulum."
The intermediate story directly after the Soul Society arc and before everyone went to Hueco Mundo was actually pretty cool, with Ichigo almost losing himself and everything. I loved that stuff. Ichigo started showing a bit more depth. Sure, it was still a bit based on the generic "GETTIN' STRONGER," but his concern was pretty admirable. Plus, the Ichigo vs. Hollow Ichigo fight was awesome.
The problem with the Hueco Mundo arc is the shear number of fights they tried to force in. Some were pretty okay (mainly Ichigo's and Kenpachi's), but there were just far too many going on constantly. Sure, it's fun to see Captains go up against their Arrancar counterparts, but don't waste a billion chapters on it, you know?
One thing that made me like Bleach so much is that it was one of the few shounen that not only had some great, evolving art, but it actually MOVED FAST. And it was always interesting.
The Hueco Mundo arc kinda ruined that. The whole fact that it was basically another rescue mission didn't help matters.
Now that the BIG SOUL SOCIETY VS. HUECO MUNDO battle has broken out, though, I'm interested again.

Time to lose friends.
I happen to love Naruto...... Shippuuden..... A lot darker than the first series. Though lately it seems like Kishimoto's going through a bit of a depression with the way he's been killing off characters. I used to hate Naruto because of all of it's hype and child-like qualities. And with the anime being a filler-thon, it's hard to keep track of the actual plot. the manga is definitely more for me, and I don't have 12 year olds telling me they're experts on manga because they read Naruto and Bleach only.
I also happen to be a huge fan of Bleach. Please don't hate me. I can still be awesome.
Anyway my girlfriend put me on to an older manga called MARS. I just finished the first of 15 volumes (127 pages long, that sucker was!) You get cool guys that are like the "cute popular" types without being the ridiculously long and thin CLAMP type dudes, and the shy, but artistic chick who sees things for they're inner beauty.
And just about every other manga stereotype there is aside from demons and time travel.
Not far enough into it to compare it to anything else or to recommend it, but so far it seems promising.

I finished Neon Genesis Evangelion 11 yesterday and I love it. This volume is the equivalent of episode 24 of the anime and the beginning of End of Evangelion. The manga is not so much a retelling of the story like the Rebuild movies are. Rather, it's the story as Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the character designer for the anime, sees it. For those who don't know, the Evangelion anime was highly personal to director Hideaki Anno. Sadamoto therefore gives his own take in the manga.
There are a bunch of things that are different in the manga. For starters, Shinji is a little less whiny and a little more assertive. He's still the same person, but the change is noticeable. The point where Evangelion changes from a lighter tone to a darker tone comes about during the party thrown for Misato when she was promoted from captain to major. I could go on and on about a bunch of other scenes in the manga...so I'll skip to the most important part.
The biggest difference by far between the anime and manga is Kaworu Nagisa. He's a lot more...twisted in the manga. There's the one scene in Volume 9 where Shinji first meets Kaworu. Shinji tells a stray kitten to stop following him and say that he can't take care of it. Kaworu, before he even introduces himself, says "I'm lost...I was never meant to be in a place like this...," picks up the kitten, and strangles it. He's different from the Kaworu in the anime for sure.
Shinji never considers Kaworu to be a friend and blocks any passes made at him. In fact, Shinji dislikes him. Still, Shinji struggles to bring himself to kill Kaworu when the fight against the last Angel finally happens.
This volume doesn't end here, as the manga transitions to the attack on NERV HQ. Shinji has all but lost hope. He visits Asuka in the hospital in hopes of comfort of any kind. What happens is different from the anime, so I'll put the following in spoiler tags. Shinji shakes Asuka, hoping for some kind of response. Asuka wakes out of her coma with the most insane look on her face and tries to strangle Shinji to death. The hospital staff come into the room, restrain Asuka, and sedate her.
SEELE will do anything to take control of the Eva units. They send in the Self-Defense Force (SDF) in an all-out assault after a failed attempt to take over the Magi computers. The volume ends here.
After 14 years, the Evangelion manga is finally reaching the end. Who knows where the story will go from here? Will the ending be something similar to the anime? What will happen to Shinji and the fate of the world? I'll have to wait until the next volume comes out, however long it takes. I know one thing for sure: I'll get to see Asuka's crowning moment of awesome (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CrowningMomentOfAwesomeMechaAnime) when she takes on nine Evas.

Read Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle 14 and 15 last night. I'm now at the Tokyo arc. Let me tell you...Tsubasa has turned dark all of the sudden. Remember how it was light-hearted in the earlier volumes? That's all gone. Volume 14 is my favorite so far, with its awesome fight scenes and plot twists.

Read Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle 16. Heiae, you were right. The crap hit the fan hard. It's amazing how dark Tsubasa has become. To give you an idea, Syaoran and his friends were in Piffle World four volumes ago, one of the more lighthearted parts of the manga. There were parts in vol 16 that made me go "Wait...what!?" (in a good way)
I'm talking about the part where the seal on Syaoran's right eye broke and we find out that the Syaoran who traveled with Sakura, Kurogane, Fai, and Mokona was actually a clone. Turns out there was more to clone Syaoran's determination to get Sakura's feathers than meets the surface. So yeah, Syaoran snaps and attacks Kamui.
I was shocked when Syaoran took out one of Fai's eyes. Holy shit...I can't believe he did it.
The real Syaoran shows up and fights clone Syoaran. Talk about an intense fight. Sakura wakes up from her slumber at the worst time possible and turns into an emotional wreck. Clone Syaoran leaves for another world, leaving Fai on the verge of death.
Onto the next volume.
Kurogane is awesome.

First hundred chapters already? Goodness that's awfully impressive Ed.
You still have a bit of a ways to go, but at this rate you should catch up soon.
And yes, One Piece's charm and sense of humor are some of the reasons I stay hooked, in addition to its ability to bring up major plot points and characters as tiny details in earlier chapters, only to bring them back in later chapters and make you go "CRAP! I remember that!". Also, later on there's a lot of discussion of the One Piece world's political structure, which I find fascinating.
I mean, yeah, it's got some great action, but any shonen manga can do THAT. The key difference is how the story is conveyed, and I think One Piece goes above and beyond with that.

You should check it out. The dub for the OVA is pretty funny, thanks to Manga Entertainment's handling of the show. Meaning...the dub is peppered with swearing and other words. It's the same reason I would want to watch a show like Angel Cop.

But I figured while it may not be worth a purchase, it was worth a rent from the library among my more respectable selections (Kingdom Come, Ananasi Boys, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter)
As it turns out...for what it is...it's actually really, really good.
I mean, it took some effort to fight my inner nerd at certain points.
Like when I saw Beast...

...
http://i425.photobucket.com/albums/pp332/NintendoFB19/Foxkei%20Faces/pokmon-dont-show-me-pokepark-again.png
But outside of that...I mean, the story was legitimately good, and it did some clever things within the continuity, like having Magneto and Xavier running the school together, or having the Blob being a giant pacisfist. Also, making the story revolve around Kitty was actually really fascinating (though the cat references got OLD).
...Cyclops as a vegan was stupid though. As was Iceman as a near heartless SOB.
But otherwise, it was actually really good. I was pleasantly surprised.

"Naruto 486...
Please kill yourself naruto for the sake of humanity, it's totally worth it."
Corrected.
But I downloaded
Codename: Sailor V
Fun fact: Sailor Moon was actually based on Sailor V. (Who later became Sailor Venus) Which is why they are so incredibly similar.

Oh g*****nit.
Viz has come around and removed my One Piece. Now I have to actually wait for them to catch up so I can see what happened in Chapters 592, 593 and 594. Even though they did finally speed up the manga publications, that's still several months from now in their release schedule.
Damn you Viz, you bunch of no good *mutters under his breath incoherently*.
You don't get between me and One Piece. That's a cruisin' for a bruisin'.

I'm sure you'll still be able to find scanlations if you try. I mean, I just nonchalantly searched for One Piece on 4chan's /rs/ and found all of the ones you listed except the last one. I also just checked Tokyo Toshokan and found them all available to torrent.
I mean, I'm not saying GO AND DO THIS but if you want it...

I always thought they looked way too similiar, now I understand why. One of life's mysteries unraveled!
I just finished my friend's copy of Samurai Champloo, pretty good.

LIFE 3!
I recently finished reading the first volume of my brother's copy of Dominion: Tank Police. For those who don't know, it's one of Masamune Shirow's lesser known franchises. It's also my favorite and the only one I don't find entirely boring or that I am capable of interpreting at ALL (seriously, has anyone else read Orion? My brother and I STILL have no idea what is going on in that book by the end of it. And he owns it and has re-read it multiple times).
Anyway, I actually saw the anime first and the manga is drastically different in a number of ways. But I liked it a lot. It almost felt like Hill Street Blues at times...just, set in a distoypian future where the police use tanks.
The designs are still neat and I dig all the characters (even though one of my favorites, Chaplain, gets picked on a lot. Especially by Specs. But I do enjoy their friendship all the same). Also, Leona is HOT. There's one scene where she's wipping down Bonaparte (her tank) in a tight top and shorts, and she starts flirting with her partner Al (who has feelings for her, she's just too caught up in her work (and tank) to notice most of the time) and it was just...WOWZERS!
I also liked the fact that the bacteria cloud held something of a larger role, specifically in the first case where the villain Baku is trying to kidnap a living air purifier. Also, unlike the anime, I liked the fact that Baku isn't really played as being noble. He's not really entirely BAD either, but he's not this noble guy he was in the anime. In fact, really, if anything, he's kinda a giant dork. But I think that just adds to the fun of the manga.
The only other thing I've been reading is One Piece (I know, shocker right?), which, as Heiae pointed out, I WAS fortunate enough to find more scans of. I'm up to chapter 610 and I gotta say it's great to see the gang back together. I'm curious to see where these adventures at Merman Island will take us.

I read the first 20 chapters of Pluto and...its amazing. Its really really good. Its only 60 chapters or so long, but i can't wait to fdinish it.
Its basically about a serial killer who is killing the 7 most powerful robots who helped end a war several years in the past. One of the 7 is a detective who is trying to solve the case.
Great stuff.
Also, I caught up on Gantz, and it looks like the final assault is on its way. Hunters from across Japan are gathering together with the Tokyo team to take out the invaders. I bet Host Samurai will return.

Gon Vol. 1
Okay, so, true, you can't really READ Gon. As it has no words. I don't think it even has Onomatopoeic words. It is purely just art.
I "read" a few of the volumes back in high school, following Gon's odd appearance in Tekken 3...making him the second weirdest licensed character cross-over in a Namco fighter.
And indeed, I enjoyed them immensely.
And with all this talk of Tekken Tag 2 and Umbrae bringing up Gon, I kinda got that itch, so I went out today browsing comics and I saw the series. And seeing as how this reprint is ONLY $5.99, I saw no reason why not to.
I still love it.
I enjoy the fact that Masashi Tanaka can convey so much personality and story without even needing to add dialog. It's a hard enough task for an author/creator to script a coherent, enjoyable story. It's even HARDER to do so WITHOUT dialog.
But Gon succeeds with flying colors. I do love this little manga. Next time I get paid, I'm getting more I think.

Also, Gon rides a lion. That's how bad assed he is.
And now, Gon Vol. 2

I started reading Buronson's crime drama "Heat" and so far, so good. Buronson is the man.
