View Full Version : Bioshock 2: A BAD IDEA

I'm of the opinion that making a sequel to the critically acclaimed Bioshock is a bad idea. There are games that easily lend themselves to being turned into franchises and others that really shouldn't be milked. To put it another way, there's a reason there are a million sequels to American Pie, but only one American Beauty.

And all the rumors circulating about the new stuff in Bioshock 2 [link (http://kotaku.com/5169361/bioshock-2-features-co+op-doesnt-feature-big-daddies-%5Bupdate%5D)-- warning, possible spoilers abound!] makes a sequel sound even less appealing to me.

So what do you guys think?

I'm...

Gonna have to agree here!

But only from a standpoint of story...as I'd love another game with the gameplay mechanics and all that...but the story was great as a standalone thing. Don't tinker with it.

Unless you set it as a prequel...where you play some citizen of Rapture..and the game starts just as everything starts going to shit....

It would be a much more together Rapture to start...with open stores and all that...lotsa normal people...but you can watch things get progressively more f***ed up as time goes on...

Yeah, I mean the mechanics are great. Those developers should take everything they learned about making a really good game and use it to make another really good game. Just, y'know, a different really good game.

The prequel thing could work, I suppose, yeah. I for one would like to see where all the people that populated that huge city were during that whole game. I mean I know lots of them were probably dead and lots were insane, but that city was HUGE. Where did they all go? What happened to them?

Now, I didn't play Bioshock (I should look it up in the library's collection, though; I get lucky sometimes), but I do know the storyline (I spoiled it for myself), and already I think Bioshock 2 is already contradicting itself.

First, from what I gather from the good ending, Jack Abbott adopted the Little Sisters, meaning that he died without having an offspring to pass down his bloodline (though being pumped up with Plasmids, I can see the hesitation). Second, this Big Sister thing... well, er... I guess they couldn't call her Big Mama... But on the final note, back to Rapture? Seven years later would mean that Rapture would have been one of the biggest artificial reef in the world! Hell, it could have been a home for Echo the Dolphin's family many generations before him. Even if there was something to explore there after seven years of flooding, Jack would meet the same fate like Samuel Jackson's character in the movie with the genetically altered mako sharks.

If it was something more like in the lines like, "Sometime after Jack Abbott's venture of aqua hell (definitely not seven years, more like, oh, a year), The U.S./Russian/French/British/Canadian/German government sent a small clean up crew to discover what the hell was down there, and then all hell was breaking loose, again, and only Jack Abbott knows what terror goes on down there, but little did he know that the true mastermind was... Mrs. Rosie Bubbles the Riveter and she's pissed that you killed all her husbands in the last game!

Okay, that was utter crap, but still, the concept of a sequel sounds nice. I think I'll try to find it somewhere.

I think the thin female "Big Sisters" are a retarded concept. Big Daddies were big and bulky for a reason, and it wasn't because there were big fat guys inside the suits. Big Sisters with their slim, feminine dive suits completely miss the point. They might as well have made them ninjas. Looks more like a GI Joe reject idea.

They look more like GLaDOs's heavy metal sisters to me.

I agree. There are ALOT of games that suffer from this. Like Prince of Persia for example. Bioshock in it's own right is an amazing, original game. Making a sequel focused mainly on making money just ruins most games like this. Just the way it happens with films.

Yeah... Though I think films don't have to suffer from sequel cash-ins nearly as much. There are a shit-ton of examples of great movies where the thought of making a sequel never seriously crossed anyone's mind. Whereas, Take-2 investors were already toasting champagne to the thought of making Bioshock a franchise during an investor conference call after the game became a success.

I just think it would be nice if the industry evolved beyond where it is now to a point closer to the Hollywood model, where they could develop these "great" games (Bioshock, &c.) not for the sole purpose of making money but instead to have these critically-acclaimed games in their portfolio, alonside the money-making blockbuster games (Gears of War and whatnot).

Haven't managed to get the game yet, and RE5 is the priority, I don't know any major story spoilers but it seems too good to have a sequel. I only see dissapointment after the wonders of Rapture.

I agree with you there.

Big Daddies were the best part of the entire game, and this new "big sister" just sounds like a retarded fanfic.

The only positive (if this is true) is that it'll have co-op.
While to truly experience the atmosphere and scariness of Bioshock, you should play it alone, co-op still sounds like an awesome addition.

I haven't played Bioshock 1, so it sounds like I'm missing out on a lot. I'll probably get the 360 version when I get the chance.

I'm not against female Big Daddies, as far as I knew, the Big Daddies in Bioshock could have had females inside them already. I just don't get why they would have a thinner, more streamlined suit.

Calling them "Big Sisters" and putting them in sleek, feminine-looking diving suits? They might as well fucking color them pink while they're at it.

You know if it's the same team?

Cause if it is, I think we'll be ok.

And why wouldn't they be Big Momma's or something?

Actually I'm fairly sure (not entirely though) that the game says there are female Big Daddies.

You're talking about in Bioshock 1, right? Well, that's what I'm saying-- they could have been female already but they didn't need a ridiculous feminine diving suit.

I concur...no new female Big Daddies. (or Mommies?) The more feminine suit...takes away what made the big daddies intimidating...their size and slow but insane power....

Yup, agreed. Those new suits may look cool but they belong in a different game.

My roommate played Bioshock extensively. I took a look at it but unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to play much of it.

Well, I can see why a sequel really isn't needed. There are many obvious reasons for that, one of which is that the sequel just won't have the same novelty as the first game.

The fact is, there's gonna be a sequel, and we can only hope that it delivers the goods. Personally, I'm gonna set my expectations real low. Though, I like the idea that you are a Big Daddy in the sequel. I do agree that Big Sister's design is kind of contrived. Moreover, I hear that she may harry you throughout the game, which is an oh-so-original survival horror element.

Yes, I'm sure. Here's a scan (http://playstationlifestyle.net/2009/03/17/hi-res-bioshock-2-game-informer-scans/) of the article.

whats the point of playing as the first big daddy? I mean where is the significance of that. Also where was he when the big sister or mamma or what ever took over rapture?

Well, I've seen the footage and the GI article. I was skeptical but from what I can see not a lot will actually change for the sequel. Yeah you're a Big Daddy, but you pretty much move the same, but you have a giant drill and/or rivet gun on one hand and plasmids on the other, AT THE SAME TIME. The ambiance seems like it'll maintain itself from the first game.

What I'm still skeptical about is the Big Sister. Yeah seeing her in movement is quite impressive, but from what it looks like she'll be attacking you periodically once you tick her off. So we gotta see how that pacing works. Either way it's looking like a solid sequel at least.
