Just started season 5 of The West Wing. Folks, I really can't say enough good stuff about this show-- if you like cleverly-written and well-acted drama with a healthy dose of humor, then you should really give this show an eyeball or two.

Also, I'm about to go watch No Reservations with Anthony Bordain. Great show on the Travel Channel.

I just watched the legendary live debate episode from the West Wing. This episode was originally broadcast completely live on NBC during the show's final season, set up to be just like a full-on, real presidential debate. And I tell you what-- I was on the edge of my seat just like during a real debate. Sure, the episode in question was originally aired back in '05 (I'm watching the series on DVD), and yeah I know who eventually wins the election, but there was this sense of urgency and realism, like a high-wire act, that came through even on the DVD. The two candidates are both really solid and I still don't know who I would vote for if this were a real election. Both of them made their cases really well. I loved it.

It was set up like how a debate should be, not this shortened stump-speech, prepared, canned, 3-minute sound bite crap we get in real life. The candidates talked to (and often over) eachother, there was a back-and-forth, and it even got a bit heated at times. All done very well, completely live, very believable.

I'm not kidding when I say this wasn't just a landmark series, it was one of the best television dramas of all-time.

I remember seeing a movie many, many years ago where-- for whatever reason-- they moved an entire island by drilling a gigantic, building-sized screw into the land and tying a thick-ass rope around the screw, then pulling it with a boat (or many boats). I'm pretty sure this movie was a comedy...

I might start watching Lost again...I listened to a plot summary of the last season, and I was sufficiently confused...

So, the Lost season premiere was...totally hokey. I mean, what the hell? Gimme a break...it was incredibly awkward watching the recap before the premiere and listening to the writers talk seriously about this clusterbork. And then there's the time travel. And the crap with Hurley and Sayed. And Michelle Rodriguez's return. And all the other stupid crap that happened with John Locke...Of course, I'm still gonna watch. That's not the point.

HeartlessCloud
01-22-2009, 04:55 PM
Lost's premier was solid but nothing spectacular. They tried to juggle too many story threads at once, but overall they did a good job.

I figured when Locke found out they needed to "move the island" that it was through time, but now that they're dislodged in time (like Desmond was), why is it that only Charlotte seems to be physically suffering from the time jumps?

Maybe the rest of them have constants? I know it doesn't make sense, but after he sees the black blood dripping down her nose, Daniel tells Desmond to go to Oxford, presumably to meet him. I still don't get it, though...unless the island is their constant or some crap like that. Or each other. It could be anything.

So I ended up watching every episode of all three seasons of Arrested Development. Probably the best sitcom I've ever seen. Although I'm kinda curious about this phantom "epilogue" episode they previewed. Could it be the movie that has been rumored about? I don't know...

Anyways, after that, I watched all the episodes of Bruce Campbell's short-lived slapstick comedy, Jack of All Trades. If Hulu has that to offer, I wonder if they have some of the older things like Hercules: The Legendary Journey, or Xena: Warrior Princess. Well, nix Xena, Hercules was pretty cool, even if most of the effects are cheesy by today's standards. Plus I never got to see the conclusion of the story arc involving the Norse gods. I only remember that Herc accidentally killed one of them... Probably Odin or Thor. Naturally it was Loki's fault...

What're you talkin 'bout? LOST doesn't have a plotline. They just throw random stuff together. Show hasn't had a "plot" since season 2. Which is, ironically enough, when I stopped watching. Season 2 was pretty good though man.

Anyways, I've been watching the A-Team. Watchin that run-of-the-mill action TV series, The Crow: Stairway to Heaven. Yes, I know, its not the movie which I love like a child. But I'm trying to watch it for what it is (an action TV series with the Crow theme), rather than what most people take it for (some kind of replacement for the Brandon Lee movie). As it stands, its an average TV series. I like the whole Crow idea though, so its OK with me.

Currently airing shows that I'm watching are Heroes (on thin ice), LOST (still completely awesome), 24 (worst season yet, also on thin ice), and Battlestar Galactica (AMAAAAAAAZING).

On HHDDVVDDBVD (http://hhddvvddbvd.ytmnd.com/), just wrapped up Season 4 of LOST and the first three seasons of House. Dunno what I'm going to move on to next.

Haven't seen House in awhile, I missed a few episodes this season when they randomly dissapeared from our DVR. Then I was like "**** it" I'll get the DVD's or something. I never liked M*A*S*H, never really watched it though either.

Watching the X-Men movie now.

Lots of people don't like MASH, but then it turns out they've never really watched it, either. They're just instantly turned off by the drab colors and strange look of the whole show, not to mention that it's got a laugh track (*ugh*). That's how I used to think, but then about 10 years back I gave it a chance... Turns out all the good stuff you've always heard about it is true-- it's actually very funny with fantastic writing. The one-liners fly like there's no tomorrow and you gotta keep on your toes if you wanna catch all the great stuff they say. The actors are great (Alan Alda for the muthaffffffff win!), too. It really is just one of the best television shows ever made.

I'm going the opposite way. Games just aren't as entertaining for me as they used to be, and consequently I'm spending less time playing them. Instead, I've been turning to television for more of my entertainment needs than I have in a looong time. I think the internets still win out of all three, though.

You should go on a gaming rediscovery sabbatical...like I did by accident. Aside from SF4 the only games I've played in the past few weeks...probably a month are old games. (NOLF2 counts...2002 is pretty old now) I'm rediscovering why I love my games. (And Ninja Gaiden for NES is teaching me) I'm having more fun with my games that I was previously. I was burned out...playing new stuff all the time...especially since a lot of new stuff isn't nearly as cool as some of the old stuff....

Mmmm I dunno. It's a good idea in theory (and I may have to give it a shot!), but in practice-- for me-- it probably wouldn't work. I don't like a lot of older games. In fact, the problem for me is that I know exactly where I want gaming to be, and what I want the future of gaming to hold, and it's still not happening. I know that sounds stupid, and maybe it doesn't even make sense, but it's true and it's frustrating for me.

I wonder if maybe I just won't be satisfied 'til I've got a holodeck?

Yeah man, we gotta be discerning, especially since money's tight these days. I've bought 2 console games in the last 6 months (L4D, Far Cry 2). ...And 2 DS games, but those are cheaper so it's cool.

The weird thing is that I'm able to overlook a lot of flaws in any other medium (I like terrible Christmas movies, for example) for the sake of having a good time. And I can do that to an extent with games, too, but only rarely, and only so much.

I am personally going neither direction. I'm generally not big into TV these days, so I don't watch much (even if I HAD reception currently). I've been told multiple times that I should get into advertising because I critique ads when they come on. I'd probably have to off myself if I was doing that for too long. If only I had a good way to buy episodes of Anthony Bourdain. I own one or two seasons on iTunes. Problem with that is my computer sucks so badly that I can't even watch them and they are .mov files so I can't stream them onto my 360 (Damn you Bill Gates!). I remember that episode. I miss The Drew Carey Show. I miss Who's Line is it Anyways too. That show was hilarious!

There are very few sitcoms that I liked and that was one of them. I liked Spin City a lot. Even after Mike left. Just Shoot Me was good too.

I could never get into that show.

More importantly:

I'm watching Futurama.

It's not a Futurama episode though.

They've cut up the first movie.

Interesting....and better yet, it's just getting to the part where they go to Neptune....hehehe

Diggnation on Revision3. Also Co-Op (aka The 1up show) moved onto Revision3. Co-Op has definitely improved over the past few episodes.

Also some Simpsons on Hulu. Who needs TV?

That depends...if your watching new Simpsons...(Which I presume is what Hulu has...) then yes...you don't need a TV...(in fact you shouldn't be allowed to watch it) Your helping keep them on the air! TURN BACK! BEFORE IT'S TOO PLATE!

Anyway...I think I'm watching Planet of the Apes (The old one...THE GOOD ONE)...(I mean I'm kinda flipping back from that and a few other things...)

Huh? I love The Simpsons. Why would you want Simpsons off the air anyway? Sure, it's not as good as it once was. How could it when it's been around for so long. If they did cancel it they would replace it with something like Dancing with the stars. Do you really want more Dancing with the Stars? DO YOU!

"Not as good as it once was" is the understatement of this still very young century....

It's NOT EVEN GOOD anymore...it went from a beloved member of my TV schedule...to a complete pile of crap....It should have bowed out gracefully before the show fell into the shit...(Like Sienfeld bowed out gracefully...now that show will forever be remembered as being ALWAYS GOOD...while The Simpsons will....probably be remembered...but not for the same reasons...)

As far as what replaces it? Dancing with the Stars you say?

That would be just as bad as what The Simpsons has become...

Yeah...they are equals now...(Which is terribly unfortunate)

What about the millions of newer fans who like the new Simpsons? You say it sucks so it should be off the air, but there are probably plenty of new-era Simpsons fans who think the episodes from when you were a fan aren't funny at all.

Maybe I'm not high enough but, I don't get those type of adult swim shows.

Adult Swim has gotten really crappy lately. I haven't bothered to watch ever since they started showing King of the Hill. I don't even think they show anime anymore. Not that I would watch anime on TV that's what the internet is for. But yeah, Adult Swim sucks.

I like Venture Bros. (even though I'm often confused but, I think that's the point. Maybe?) I also liked Harvey Birdman (Come on! it had Steven Colbert!)

I can't fucking stand King of the Hill! At first I thought it was making fun of idiot redneck texans but, after a few episodes I'm not so sure. Argh! Words can not describe how much I hate that show.
