Ok, so I have to write this research paper for my Sociology class. The topic is Elementary School Classroom Discipline and Parental Involvement (I did not pick the topic but I still have to do a paper on it..) Anyways, I have to have 30 people of different genders and ages answer a survey (that I hopefully attached correctly) so that I can get this assignment done. So if any of you would kindly take this survey I would greatly appreciate it:) You can respond either by this thread or PM me, whichever you prefer..
Thanks in advance!!

1. Basic, non-physical discipline. Detention, standards, suspension, and things of that nature. Detention was usually effective because it took away a student's free time. Suspension is like a free vacation and remains the most absurd punishment known to man.
2. Discipline similar to the methods I experienced are perfectly acceptable.
3. Parents tend to side with their children over the teachers, which undermines a teacher's authority in the eyes of the student. A parent should make sure a student does his/her homework and studies at home in order to be prepared for class. If a parent lets their child do whatever they want, that child is doomed in the classroom.

1.) Aside from detention, we also had something called "on the line." They painted a long orange line on the playground at the elementary school, and teachers could assign students line time, which they served during recess. Both were fairly effective.
2.) I think what I described in 1.) would be acceptable. I don't think we should just slap a kid on the wrist and then leave it at that. Super Nanny isn't the last word, I say.
3.) I imagine nowadays "paranetal involvement" doesn't mean much at all, in any context. I think a parent's involvement can have a huge impact on a student's behavior. Encouraging or disciplining a student appropriately can absolutely help a student.

A bit about number ten... If a child is a "ring leader" or someone who is always making trouble, singling them out might be productive. However, if they aren't, I can't imagine it would help much.

Man, I feel like I answered in too great of detail. But I overthink things, it's my proverbial "cross to bear."

1.) In kindergarten, we had a color-coded chart that hung from the blackboard. There were four colored segments on it: green, yellow, orange, and red. There were little slips of paper with the students' names attached to the chart and everybody started the day on green. If someone caused trouble or acted out, their name was moved over to the yellow area. If they acted out again, they moved over to the orange area. If they acted out a third time, their name was moved to the dreaded red area and the teacher would give that student's parents a phone call to let them know that they were misbehaving in class. I'd say it was pretty effective since it provided a colorful visual representation of everybody's status. Watching your name move closer and closer to the red zone is unnerving, and it gives you all the more reason to behave when you know you have one or two strikes against you. (For the record, I was usually a well-behaved lad and only made it to the orange zone one time.)
2.) If a student is acting up and just won't behave, make them sit in the corner while you continue the lesson. Not in the back of the classroom, mind you, but in the front where all the other students can see them. That way, the misbehaving student would sit there knowing that the entire class is watching them. It might be embarrassing enough for them to behave better next time. If that doesn't get the job done, there's always good old standby detention and calls to the kid's parents.
3.) Well, it's definitely important for parents to reward good school behavior and punish bad behavior. If your children get good grades, they deserve to be rewarded for it somehow. If they consistently get bad grades and show no desire to improve, they need to be punished accordingly. If a parent doesn't care about his or her child's performance in school, then neither will the child.

8.) 10
9.) 5**
10.) 1
*It really depends on the school's punishment, though. Sometimes it's sufficient and sometimes it isn't. That is the parent's decision to make.
**I guess it would depend on the type of physical discipline we're talking about. If we're talking about a slap on the wrist with a ruler, then yeah, that's fine. If we're talking about a paddlin' (http://bit.ly/10qLvq), that's going a bit too far.

The elementary school I attended did enforce corporal punishment. However, the ones in charge of said form of discipline needed a parent's written approval, and all the kids brought home a form to sign on the first day concerning whether or not the parents would allow it. Mine did. Oddly enough, I never got in trouble while in elementary school! Although that one time in 4th grade I did have to stand ON THE LINE for my morning recess.

Alucards- You did, but that's ok, I have a tendency to do the same thing..
Red-Yea I attended an elementary school in Lousiana which was (I believe) the last state to do away with spanking in school. I was only allowed to be spanked by the teacher..My 4th grade year I beat up some kid (and he was a boy..ha ha) because he wouldn't come off my tether ball pole. My teacher was an angry very pregnant and very southern black woman..NEVER piss off an angry preggo southern black lady..My ass stung for a week afterwards!
SE-Thank you, although what in the hell is a Sentient spotted fungus? I don't remember that being an option, lol
