nothing at the moment, but if you count a crappy ipod touch game.......then yes!!!
I just got a gaming laptop for Christmas, so I've been catching up on a bunch of PC games I've missed:
Half-Life 2
Company of Heroes
BioShock
Crysis
Fallout 3

I'm mainly playing MGS4, Prince of Persia and.. well.. That's it.
After I finish those, I'm going to jump back into my long RPGs sitting on backlog: Valkyria Chronicles and Persona 4. I put them on hold for a while.

I went to Blockbuster to rent me some prince of Persia... unfortunately it was all checked out, so I decided to give Dark Sector a try.
It looks real pretty, and the glaive is really fun, but it tends to get repetitive. Also, the aiming is a bit slippery.

I polished off the Concubine yesterday in Prince of Persia. Just about 6 Fertile Grounds and two more bosses to go!
I'll probably try and make a little MGS4 progress today too.
I think I'm the worst RTS player ever...and am I the only person who can't manage to play tense and/or stressful games (such as Half-Life 2, for example) without taking a break ever 45 minutes or so? It's kinda getting annoying, and it's making HL2 feel like it's taking forever to get through.

Mass Effect is so bloody boring! So much talking, I don't care! He runs so slowly! Die already!
It's an RPG first, an action game second. I absolutely love it. It's one of my favorite games ever and I can't wait for the sequel.
The only thing that bugged me was the texture pop-in and inventory system. Which the PC version fixed.. Sadly, my PC can't play it, so whatever!

I realize that there are stats and whatnot governing the shooting in Mass Effect, but I don't care-- the gunplay sucked. It never felt "good" if you know what I mean. By the end of the game my guy was powerful as hell but it still didn't feel like he could aim for shit, though his stats said that he was very accurate.
If they could make lightsaber-fighting work beautifully in an RPG setting (KOTOR) then I'm surprised they couldn't do FPS. Stop trying to shoehorn in all this action-RPG stuff and just gimmee a great turn-based combat system like you did with KOTOR!
I actually have a laundry list of complaints against Mass Effect. I liked the game I guess. But it still goes on the list of these giant, epic-style current-gen games that fail horribly at getting some of the smallest, most basic stuff right (along with, say, GTA4 and Fallout 3), such as its conversation system and its morality system, and yes-- the combat.
Heiae
12-31-2008, 06:36 PM
I never had an issue with the aiming. As long as I used weapons my character specialized in, I was pretty much always hitting the mark.
But, I'm not going to sit here and say Mass Effect is a perfect game. It wasn't. But I enjoyed it so I guess that's all that matters.
RimDot
12-31-2008, 06:43 PM
My biggest complaint is the talking. They talk so damn much and the writing is terrible. I try to listen but, my mind wonders onto something more interesting like counting the pixels on my TV. I also get lost a lot. "Ok, were am I supposed to go"? It's not that I hate RPGs, In fact I love em' But, Mass Effect doesn't know what it is. Is it a shooter? Is it an RPG? Now don't get me wrong Combining genres is a great thing. If done properly. In Mass Effect's case it should have leaned to the shooter side a bit more.
Heiae
12-31-2008, 06:44 PM
I didn't think the writing was terrible at all. Again, my opinion.
I didn't know there was so much to dislike about Mass Effect. I've only ever heard good things. It must be one of those great cases of "different strokes for different folks."
And now that I'm bored with talking about Mass Effect, I'm going to go play Prince of Persia!
RedWizard
12-31-2008, 06:47 PM
I really should get around to finishing Mass Effect. Its fun.
But anyway, if you treat Fallout 3 as an FPS, of course its gonna come up short. Its an RPG first, and an FPS second. That said, it still can't hold a candle to Fallout 1 or 2 (for example, removing two of the three armor stats was a gameplay blunder), but its still good in its own right.
RimDot
12-31-2008, 06:51 PM
Fallout 3 had that VAT system. So there really wasn't any need to shoot from the side. I could probably count the times I shot from the side on one hand.
Fallout 3 is a million times better than Mass Effect in my opinion.
RedWizard
12-31-2008, 06:58 PM
Mass Effect wasn't even marketed as an FPS though. It isn't in the first person, after all. Its an RPG before anything else, and a TPS second. I am not a fan of TPS games (Gears of War, Army of Two, etc etc), but it is the RPG elements that make Mass Effect worth playing. At least to me.
WanderingMind
12-31-2008, 06:59 PM
I've never played Fallout 3 and Mass Effect.
Some more thoughts on Underground:
The enemy AI in Underground really took me by surprise after playing Uncharted. In Uncharted, it was always a good idea to be on the move because enemies could sniff you out if you camp somewhere too long. I died a number of times because I did just that. In Underground...things are a lot easier for me. I fire a bunch of shots near a bunch of Nazis, run for cover, and wait for them to come to me. That or I shoot them before they shoot me.
GlassAdam
12-31-2008, 09:33 PM
What I meant by the aiming issue: yeah, when your stats are up you hit the mark just like you're supposed to, that's not what I mean. It's that it gives you full control of the aim like any dedicated shooting game, but without the finesse and nuance and subtlety. So, for example, if I've maxed out my aiming on a weapon, I can aim somewhere in the vicinity of my target and get a perfect shot. BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT I WANT! If it's gonna pretend to be a shooter, than it had better go all the way and get the controls up to snuff... Or do like Fallout 3 did and gimmee VATS (not that Fallout 3 got VATS right, but that's another story). What I'm saying is, if you're gonna be a shooter, then be a shooter-- you can't just pretend.

I've got the final power in Prince of Persia, so now it basically comes down to healing the final 4 Fertile Grounds and beating the Alchemist and the Hunter. And fighting the final boss and whatnot.
I got slowed down because I didn't have enough Light Seeds to acquire the final power, so I had to do some backtracking. I usually have enough before hand, but that didn't happen this time.
Now, do I finish of PoP or play the rest of MGS4's Act 3..

That's okay. I'm not picky! I signed up using the account with my 14-day trial so I hope it didn't ruin my chances of using the 30 days that are supposed to come with the game. I couldn't find the code but maybe I'll check again considering I have 6 hours and 25 minutes left to install. Hurrah!

I guess in FF you don't have to be too picky anyway. Most classes are variations of the basic 6. Paladin? Warrior + White Mage. Ninja? Warrior + Thief. Dragoon? Just a Warrior who can jump. But, I digress. Nothing's as cool as a Red Mage. Except maybe an Onion Knight, a class suspiciously absent from FF11...

oh man, insectrons are amazing.
What you do is, you use the factory (which is incredibly obnoxious) to make the third rank trap, buy the second rank trap, get a TON of sanchez fruit, and go to town. Bait all your traps with sanchez fruit and post em all at once in the same place, in different areas each time. I've found that if they're in the same area, they have the same results.
I've got a ladybug (Lady Death) with maxed attack and near maxed defense. I've got a shovelnose named David Spade. I had a mantis (PsychoMantis) before I bred him to make SUPER OMEGA AWESOME MANTIS PRIME who can annihilate anything, or at least will be able to when I'm done training him.
It's incredibly addicting and I recommend going back to this otherwise OVERLY mediocre game to try it again.

I just finished Prince of Persia.
Now, let me talk about this controversial ending:
I thought it was actually okay. The Prince destroying the trees of light to bring Elika back was just to show that he loves her. The problem is that their relationship didn't develop quite as much as it should have to make this feel more legitimate.
It was close. They were getting really friendly and pretty obviously cared about each other, but it's rather abrupt, to say the least, for the Prince to destroy what is keeping a massive, malevolent god at bay that they just sacrificed so much to restore.
But I realize that this is his nature. He wasn't opening up at all throughout the entire game. Elika's past and her world was explored, but the Prince constantly put up a front.
I have a feeling we'll be getting a lot of character development for the Prince in the sequel. We know very little of him now, and I think that will come into play later.
And now to end the speculation and junk. To put it simply, I am satisfied with Prince of Persia. At a later time, I think I'll write a review and point out exactly what I didn't like - because there's some stuff that really irked me. Otherwise, though, this was one fantastic looking, fun, and worthwhile game. With, you know, an ending that was just ALMOST there.
Perhaps people wouldn't be giving it so much hate if it wasn't so obviously setting up the sequel.

Played Chrono Trigger for 4 hours straight. I went back to prehistoric times and powerleveled some of my characters. Once I realized where I was supposed to go next, I went to 600 AD where I fought a bunch of enemies on a bridge. I found my way to the woods, dodged every single enemy, and met Frog once again. Looks like I would have to do a fetch quest....across time! I went to the mountains, found the broken Masamune, went back to the present time, talked with some guy who could repair the sword, went back to 600 AD, and went to Frog's place once more. I wasn't done yet. I go way, way back in time where I meet Ayla. I get the stone I needed to repair the sword, only to have my Gate Key stolen. Time to kick some ass. I beat up a bunch of dinosaurs and other creatures and got the key back.
Say...how I do I get Ayla to join my party for good? Am I at that point where I can do it?

Two things about that:
1.) Star Ocean 2 is really short for an RPG. My first play-through was a little over 30 hours while my second play-through is currently at 26 hours and change. Playing through the game twice is roughly equivalent to playing through a "regular" RPG once.
2.) You can't see all the characters in one play-through. There are 12 playable characters, but you can only have 8 of them in your party. That means that if you want to see all the characters in action, you have to play the game twice. Again, though, it's a short RPG, so that really isn't a big deal.

30 hours is a decent length...I hate for the game to drag on too long...
I beat FFVII in 25...
Oh. Well, I guess I should also point out that I'm a bit of a completionist when I play RPGs, so it usually takes me a while to finish them. Most RPGs typically take me about 50 to 60 hours to beat (maybe 70 to 80 if I really like it).

30 hours? I'd call that short. 60 hours is average.
Anyways, I'm playing Final Fantasy XI again, and does anybody know what exactly I'm supposed to do for the Crystal Line mission in Bastok? I found the Crag of Dem but I have no idea what my next move is to be.

That all sounds really, really confusing. I was thinking about picking up the DS version because everybody operates all over themselves whenever Chrono Trigger is mentioned, but now I'm not so sure... The game sounds complicated.
I just did a lot in 4 hours. Unlike some games that make you go on really complicated fetch quests, Chrono Trigger is easy to play.

I finished Dark Sector and got Prince of Persia.
So far it's pretty good. I love the parkour elements and the visuals are real purty, but the combat makes me cringe sometimes. I miss the Sands of Time, flippy, wire-fu esque battles. The new PoP's combat is almost like a fencing sim; thrust, parry, riposte, touche, rinse, repeat. Hell, on more than one occasion I beat a boss "battle" in two strikes. He slashed, I rolled around him, two quick sword swipes and he tumbled off the edge of the arena, just like that.
And fighting The Warrior is just plain irritating. The first three battles consisted of me trying desperately to position him in front of the environmental kill zones with a camera that doesn't show where they are. And he constantly deflects my attacks. More than once we'd go back and forth: I attack, he parries, he counter-attacks, I parry, I counter attack, he parries, etc. etc. ad nauseum.
Took me forever to realize that Elika apparently can't be counter-attacked.
Another thing that irks me is the camera when freerunning. It has a habit of moving to catch a more epic angle, which I don't mind, but the thing is, the directional controls stay the same for the original angle. So I'd jump and land on a column, with a wall for me to run up on the right. So I'd think to myself, "The wall is on the right, so I want to hold the left stick to the right in order to jump that direction and propel myself to safety." But after tapping right and pressing A, the prince suddenly moved around the column 90 degrees and proceeded to jump into oblivion.
Good thing Elika has the ability to fly my ass to safety every time I jump where I don't want to... Which begs the question, why doesn't she just fly both our asses to where we're going? And don't tell me it's because the prince is too heavy to fly for extended periods, 'cause there's been moments where I'd be on a really long line that extended halfway across the area, and then fall, and she'd fly me back to the starting area with no problem.
Which brings up another griping point for me, why in the fuck can't the prince take a 5 foot drop without yelling for Elika like a scared bitch? I don't know how many times I'd be grip-falling down a wall, and I'd be about 4 feet off the ground and figure, "Hey, might as well jump and save a little time right?" So I jump.
Well apparently Mr. Clown Britches is a little scared of heights for a guy who apparently plunders super-tombs and jumps off canyons, because Elika has to come in and save his ass from a 4-foot drop, which makes me bite my controller in rage*.
But overall, I enjoy this game. I haven't finished it yet, but the freerunning (minus iffy camera) and the characters make me want to keep going. I really enjoy The Prince and Elika's conversations, especially the rather random ones. (My favorite was when they played "I spy")

You have the exact same problems I've had with the game. Except for the camera. I really didn't have an issue with it.
Wait until you get Wings of Ormazd. I'll never understand why, when you finally do get the ability to fly, Elika will literally go exactly where you need to go, bank down and go ALL THE WAY AROUND THE LEVEL to another pad and THEN go to the destination.
UGH.
Combat needs less quicktime events and more variety next time. I liked fighting, but I didn't like getting knocked back into a quicktime event, and if a screwed that one up I was in another quicktime event.. UGH. Just give me a dedicated DODGE button and don't make these segments outside of normal play - get rid of the quicktime and just make it happen like a normal attack. Base all of the combat off of the Prince's, so that if you get grabbed, you can counter it by slamming on the grab button or something.
The whole dying-during-4-foot drops is nothing new, though. I remember in Warrior Within how many times I'd make the smallest jumps ever and the Prince would DIE. What?!
Still, I loved the game. Hahaha.. I'm sure the sequel can fix a while lot of the little issues that mar this one.
PS: I loved that I Spy conversation too. It was hilarious.

Oh yeah, I've gotten the wings or ormazd and literally yelled in frustration*.
I also got the jumpy boots of ormazd, and I sat back for a minute and thought, "Wait... this is the exact same thing... it just has a different animation... what the fuck!?"
Also, I don't know if anyone else has had problems like this, but on two occasions it seems that certain buttons just stop working. Last night, after posting that the back button suddenly stopped. I could not open the map no matter what I did. I opened the xbox guide, and hit back, so the button itself still worked, the game just didn't seem to register it. So I saved and reloaded and it seemed to work fine, but about 10 minutes later I couldn't use Elika's compass ability. So I reloaded again, and it still didn't work. So I called it a day and went to sleep. I'm playing now, and it seems to work again.

Yeah. The Hand of Ormazd and the.. Boots of Ormazd or whatever are both VERY similar.
I don't really like most of the powers because they just break all the awesome platforming. When they're using sparingly to connect the awesome platforming segments, which you do have in some instances, they're great, but not when they're overused.
Especially that shitty Wings of Ormazd crap.
And about your button issue: I didn't really run into that. Two or three times Elika didn't respond to my calling for the compass, but that's it.

so i was playing haze last night, not a great game but i still wanted to finish, i came to this part of the game where i find my way to the rooftop. the guy told me through a certain door, so i meeleed the door, the only way to open doors in this game so far. i meeleed and meeleed it some more. i finally made it through the doors, but i fell through the world when i passed the doors. that's right, i meeleed so hard that i broke the game and starting falling through a dead zone. i started to free fall through the floors, and the best part is that it saved it at that spot for a checkpoint. that's right, that's the real kicker. the checkpoint is beyond the doors i meeleed. so everytime i would restart to the last checkpoint, it would bring back to where i was falling. stupid game.
i hate you haze.
i would redo the whole game, but it's not a game worth doing over for now. maybe when i have some time to kill.

01-03-2009, 07:19 AM
Well, I just finished it too. And I agree with you about the ending, I was okay with it; it wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either.
And I love how it's blatantly setting up a sequel, hell the name of the finished game achievement is fucking, "To be continued..."

Yes, you can make some amazing levels, but the platforming with your sackboy itself is boring, even if you add in a ton of awesome pulleys and rocket packs and rocket cars. You're slow, unagile and.. I dunno.
LBP just wasn't for me. Levels are awesome, but I prefer to have a little more control over my character than just run slowly, jump, grab and move between planes. (Which I realize is mostly void because the game is all about the LEVELS, so don't call me out on that.)

Well, HL2: Episode 1 is complete...definitely not as incredible as the first game, but it was still pretty interesting. I hate all the stupid dark sections, though. Waiting for my flashlight to recharge isn't my idea of a good time.
The part that pissed me off (and that they fixed with in Episode 2), is that your Run, Breathe, and Flashlight is all on the same bar.
Going to play a little AOE3 now.
FO3 later.
That's what everyone tells me, so I think I'm gonna take a break before I dive into Ep. 2. I'm feeling shooter fatigue.

I'm about to start Final Fantasy IX for my, oh... 16th playthrough? Heh, I jest. The only Final Fantasy I've played that many times is the original and IV. But what is it that brings me back to the ninth installment so many times? The atmosphere? The music? The characters? The Everything? Definitely the everything. So great. I've always said that Square should make Tetra Master cards for people to collect and play with. It would be good times.

Currently playing: nothing. I've already grown tired of Advent Rising's combat, and I haven't even gotten any cool powers yet. It's just so damned combat-heavy, but the gunplay is not fun at all... So I put the game down. Unfortunate, since the first half-hour (before you started fighting) or so had so much promise. The game's so awesomely cinematic it's a shame they have to go and ruin it with combat.
We'll see, maybe I'll pick it back up again.

Fortunately for me, I live on a floor where people are really trusting. We leave our video game consoles in the lounge overnight and they never get stolen, except for my roommate who took the power cord to my Wii, but that's another story.
I decided to start Episode 2, but I only got a few minutes in when I decided to put it off until exam break, which is the week of the 19th, so it doesn't distract me from school. Tried playing some more FO3, and i gotta say...I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought I would, at least so far. It feels like a cross between a mediocre shooter and a mediocre RPG, at least in terms of combat. It's a little too close to Oblivion for me as well, in terms of feel and style. I know, I should've been expecting this, but it doesn't make it any more enjoyable.
Played more Company of Heroes...I'm finally decent with the Americans, and can easily handle a number of strategies I encounter, unless it's Wehr MGs or damn Panzer Elite halftrack rushes, but...practice makes perfect, I suppose.

Once I started chapter two, though, something very odd happened: the dialogue suddenly became horrendous. It was Engrish-y beyond belief. It was so bad that I honestly don't know whether they made it this bad on purpose or not. Fun to read, sure, but my inner English major cringes with every line.

I finished Chrono Trigger an hour ago. I brought Chrono back to life and then fought Lavos. I took the well to 1999 AD, where I fought the outer shell of Lavos. It was a walk in the park compared to the fight that would come after. For the real fight against Lavos, I used Frog, Lucca, and Ayla. I equipped Ayla with an item that let her counter attacks and an item for Frog that increased his critical rate. I had to constantly heal Lucca, but it paid off in the end. Inferno was the one tech that made all the difference during the fight against the last form of Lavos. It deals very high damage and you are sure to win if you keep on using it after getting rid of the left thing.

Just finished Prince of Persia. Great game. But, "To Be Continued..."? Damn't I want to know what happens now!!!! I'm happy that Elika is alive, though. They created some good chemistry together. Maybe we'll get more on the Prince. I mean they didn't even mention that he was a prince.

Going back to the old days for a bit with some Sinistar, Smash TV, Robotron, and Sunset Riders.

In the manual it says that the Prince was born to a common family and is a prince in "Nickname only"
Although they could just be fuckin' with us.

Really? That's just stupid if they're serious. Man, I haven't bothered looking at a game manual since the PS1 era.

Last manual I read all the way through was the original Wario Ware for the GBA.

<--- Currently Playing:
Little Big Planet
BioShock
Dead Space
Metal Gear Solid
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
There's actually a TON more I'm playing, but I'm trying to limit myself so that I finish a game for once.

good man. Which MGS? I own every major game (excluding the GBA, PSP, and VR titles) plus the document of MGS2.
Of those, for story MGS1 was my favorite, and for gameplay 3 took the cake.
I am a fanatic about trying to play MGS4 when I do play it with zero spoilers. So if you've played it, please mark your spoilers.

Ah. I meant to incude that it is Metal Gear Solid 4. I've only played the Metal Gear Solid Series (1-3 and now nearly done with 4) and Portable Ops for the PSP.
Worry not, my friend. I remain Spoiler Free.
besides, I don't even know how to use the spoiler tag. ^_^

I usually don't read 'em either, but when I rented it the manual was included, what was odd... So I decided to read it for shits.

Well, finished Smash TV and Sunset Riders.
STV's final boss
was a ripoff. Mutoid Man with the announcer's head? WEAK!
Sunset Riders...well...I thought I'd beat it...
After the credits...the game started over at the first stage with my lives and score intact. I didn't bother playing through again, but I take that as a sign that SSR has no end other than the game over screen.

You should start reviewing stuff...it gets easier as you do it...and you get better and better...
I can show you my old reviews...vs my recent ones...it's weird...
Well, I've never really thought about it but I'm sure it wouldn't be too bad. I don't play a lot of games to review, and the games I do play are so outdated lol. But I'd love to check out your reviews. Maybe it will spark my desire to write!

I just got to Act 5 in MGS4. The ending boss fight of Act 4..
was one of the most epic boss battles I've ever played and stirred up so much love and nostalgia, along with my hardon for giant robots, that I almost wanted to cry.
I finished off RAY with an epic dodge and one final kick from REX's right leg.
*Sniff*
Also, lol at them acting like Raiden died only for Otacon to mention he'd be fine and junk. I know he isn't going to die in the end, but it would have been rad for him to just come back from the apparent dead and kick some faces.
I'm sure he will anyway, though. Thanks to my friend and his MOUTH. I'll forgive him - he did buy me the game!
I assume this is the last act? If it's following the standard play style of five acts and maybe an epilogue or something.
I'll probably beat the game this weekend. Here I come, feature-length-movie final cut-scene! 50 bucks says Big Boss is alive or something!

Hopefully...it won't be long...as I am playing a game I plan on reviewing right now! Just gotta finish it...
till then...all of my reviews are archived (without badges unfortunately) on my Gamespot account (http://www.gamespot.com/users/AlucardsFate/contributions?tag=profile-nav;contributions)...
You can tell the old ones...not only are they for older games...but they are somewhat shoddily written and very short...especially compared to the new ones...

It truly was.
I wanted to set a little kitten on fire once I saw Raiden remove his arm. And then the whole talk with Rose as he died? Didn't help. I really wanted Raiden to shine. I haven't started Act 5 yet.

I put off Persona 4 as well. Persona 4 and Valkyria Chronicles.
Can't wait to get back to those, but I love MGS4 so much. I don't know if I want it to end.

Valkyria... I haven't even opened mine yet. I abused my discount at GameStop and got a ton of games, but haven't opened a bunch of them.

Valkyria is amazing. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. You can't help but to.
It's another long game, though. I might have to put it back even longer as Persona 4 saps up 99% of my time. It's a needie girl.
When I first saw trailers of Valkyria, I was really interested, but with all the other great titles coming out, I can't really justify the cost, especially after spending so damn much on games before Christmas.

Valkyria is up there, if not better than, most of the titles that came out this holiday season.
