So my girlfriend gave me a very early Christmas gift today: A Retro Duo.

For the uninformed, a Retro Duo is a hybrid SNES/NES. So I'm trying to build a collection of those games.

So what are some good SNES and NES games you guys would recommend? Avoid the obvious (Super Metroid, Kirby Superstar, Chrono Trigger), please. I'm looking for games I may have forgotten or are more obscure, like Cybernator and Faxanadu.

So far I have:

NES:
Faxanadu
Guardian Legend
Castlevania
Castlevania 2
Startropics 2
Legacy of the Wizard

SNES:
Uniracers
Mortal Kombat 2
Starfox

Gonna try for LttP this week.

I can certainly help with the SNES category...though many of my suggestions might have fallen into obvious.

So...let's try some NOT so obvious ones.

Secret of Evermore (RPG, Squaresoft)
Act Raiser (again, RPG, Squaresoft)
Killer Instinct (Fighter, Rare)
Super Castlevania IV (Platformer, Konami)
Maximum Carnage (Beat-em-up, Acclaim)
Out of This World (Platformer, err...some company)
Flashback (Platformer, err...another company I don't know)
Stunt Racer FX (Racer, Nintendo)
Earthworm Jim (Platformer, don't recall)
Sparkster (Platformer, Konami)
Super Street Fighter II (Fighter, Capcom)

...That's about all I can think of without getting into the "duh, obviously" category.

You have Castlevania and Castlevania 2...but not 3? Are you high? 3 is the best one! (And probably the 2nd best CV game)

If I could find 3, I'd have it, trust me.

That is easily my second favorite non-Metroidvania. First is Bloodlines.

OoF: I saw Flashback and Out of this World for $5 each... I keep hearing they're amazing. I should get those. Also, ActRaiser would be sweetness to have, because I have a soft spot for every game related to it (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma).

Oh lordy...Marble Madness. Forgot about that.

How about Tecmo Super Bowl!? Classic "only sports game I'll ever love" action...

Ah yes, Demon's Crest, Contra 3, Ogre Battle and Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Awesome all.

I figured Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG and Earthbound would be a little obvious.

Also, since SnakeEyez said Demon's Crest...that reminds me...

Super Ghouls N' Ghosts (Platformer, Capcom)

Yeah, probably...but I figured I might as well.

Good luck finding a copy of Earthbound for less than $100, though.

Replying to you, SE:

NES:
Blaster Master (I feel dumb for not remembering this)
Adventures of Lolo (saw it, was $30, passed for now)
Shadowgate (Do it. Do it.) (I seriously might get it, get a capture card that works with this thing, and LP it... along with Uninvited and Deja Vu. Just for the lulz. It'd certainly be fun... for you guys. :P)
Marble Madness (Had it when I was a kid, loved it)
River City Ransom (Though Scott Pilgrim is basically the same thing, I'd love to have RCR. It's my second fav beat-em-up ever right behind Shadow Over Mystara)
Strider (Saw it, thought about it)

SNES:
Yoshi's Island (got it on GBA)
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (saw it for $35...)
Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen (it'd take a lot of luck to find)
Contra 3: The Alien Wars (again, if I can find it...though I'm sure this is pretty easy to come across)
Earthbound (like you said, not a high chance to find it for cheap...)
Demon's Crest (sure, why not? A reminder of when Capcom was awesome)
Zombies Ate My Neighbors (I keep hearing about this...I never got to play it)

Actraiser, my friend, was developed and published by Enix, not Squaresoft. And while we're on the subject, Out of This World was developed by Delphine Software and published by Interplay.

NES:
Dragon Warrior
Dragon Warrior 2
Dragon Warrior 3
Ys Book I
Ys Book II

SNES:
Actraiser 2
Secret of Mana (how did anyone not say this yet?)
Seiken Densetsu 3 (import... worth it)
Mega Man X
Mega Man X2
Mega Man X3
Ys III: Wanderers from Ys
Dragon Quest VI (The only SNES-era DQ released in the US)
TMNT 4

Metal Gear 2 is an MSX2 game, not an NES game!

Unless you mean SNAKE'S REVENGE!?!?!

PLEASE, NO! :neko_115:

No I don't mean Snake's Revenge, give me more credit than that, jeez. I didn't realize MG2 was released on MSX2, having been born in '92 I never had a NES or SNES, and have only played it through Subsistence.

My colleagues have all recommended some nice games. Here's some I like:

NES:

Life Force (shooter)
Abadox (shooter)
Commando (shooter)
Rygar (action/adventure)

SNES:
Axelay (shooter)
Super Turrican 2 (shooter)
Twisted Tales of Spike McFang (Zelda style game)
Pocky and Rocky (action/adventure)
Rock and Roll Racing

Edit: UN Squadron (shooter)

For the time being, I'll just do one or two per system:

SNES:
Super Metroid

NES:
Super Mario Bros. 3
Ducktales

Not sure if you already got them, but that's the quick list for now.
