1UP used to be something called Gamers.com, right? That's fine and all, but I seem to remember there being a time when it was videogames.com. Or, at the very least, that was the website promoted heavily within the pages and on the covers of EGM.

Now, the URL videogames.com redirects to gamespot. What gives?

maybe...the brainchild of everything...was ....videogames.com???

Perhaps Gamespot simply bought that domain when it expired.

Well, what I'm really asking is: does anybody else remember videogames.com being the "egm" website before there was a 1UP? Because all I ever hear anybody talk about is gamers.com, but nobody ever mentions videogames.com. I'm not crazy, right?

I remember.

It was advertised in the first OPM I ever bought, issue 7 I believe (the one with Tekken 3 on the cover).

Yes! KomodoAce, you win a gold star!

Awesome.

The ad was all black and they had VIDEOGAMES.COM in huge font and bubble lettering I believe.

Wow. That's... That's a pretty damned good memory you've got. I'm kinda scared.

But seriously, they had it in the EGMs, too, since that's the only mag I read. I'm glad to see you remember.

Yeah, that OPM was the first Ziff-Davis mag I ever bought. That was like 97 or 98. "Wat" was the editor in chief.

I didn't read an EGM till 99 and didn't read regularly till 01.

Funny that you mention my memory. My long-term memory is great, but if you asked me who washed the dishes last night or what we had for dinner the night before (Amuro can attest to this), I can't remember a damn thing.

It's funny how memory works...I remember what games got Shame of the Month in certain issues of EGM, but I'm terrible at remembering phone numbers by memory.

Here's the truth:

EGM had a site even further back, called Nuke.com, that was on with Gamespot, before Gamespot was well.....Gamespot.

Anyways, I'm not sure about the whole, VideoGames.com, as I didn't have internet until like, '99.

However, I do know 1up.com was started in October of 2003.

Before that, dating back to...well.....I think it was 2001, was gamers.com

Each site had there own different page, and message board you would have to register for.

for example: gamers.com/opm got you to OPM, although, you could simply put in www.playstationmagazine.com and get redirected to gamers.com/opm.

Nuke.com, eh? Also redirects to gamespot nowadays. That's a shame, since it's a pretty good domain name.

Hmmmm any chance that was the inspiration for the name Giant Bomb.com?!? That would be pretty clever...

I remember when 1up used the name "1up 2.0" when it changed the layout of the site in May 2004.

I remember that too Wandering.

The word now is, (sorry if this is a little derailment), that the 1up site will remain.

I remember when 1up used the name "1up 2.0" when it changed the layout of the site in May 2004.

thats because it is 2.0.

v1 was good. Basically 1up without personal pages, and just the Magazine boards

Those were the days. Do you think 1up will go to 3.0?

No.

Unless it just goes to UGO.

Guys, it's been confirmed that 1up will remain in San Francisco and the site isn't going anywhere.

It's from a thread on the 1up boards, and the site webmaster (known as Thummp) said he talked with Sam (president of UGO? someone important) and this is what he said:

Thummp wrote:

Had a quick talk with Sam. Obviously a lot is going on here, but amidst all the doom and gloom talk I wanted you guys to know that nothing is changing regarding the 1up boards. We will still be moving to the new boards. NGR will have their own board, which we hope to add as soon as we can. The new boards are also going to get some improvements as well. Again, the boards are not closing.

According to Simon Cox 1up isn't going to become a part of UGO.com. From what I got from his blog is that they still have creative control of 1up with UGO financially backing them. I'm going to keep watch on 1up. See what the remaining staff does with it.

I probably won't leave, unless they fuck it up bad.

There's no other site I really want to post and talk to people on.

You shame foxkei.

You shame foxkei.

No, I don't.

Sorry, Foxkei isn't really a gamesite.

It's a personal site, that has a forum for friends, and based on games. It may be changing, but it's not really.

Gamesites are established ones, like Gamefaqs, Gamespot, 1up, IGN, etc.

Quality over quantity.

I do spend more time on 1up, but it's not easy to get into a intelligent discussion concerning gaming issues without it reducing into a horrible fanboy argument.

That's just me though.

I still stick by my decision to leave 1up. It's going to be a long time before the technical issues get fixed and who knows where the site will go from here.

Probably Sam Kennedy. He's the editor-in-chief of 1up (at least, I think that's what his title is).

This is what we needed to hear from the 1up staff:
