Title says it all eh?

So, okay, I'm getting paid this week and I'm going to go ahead and get myself an Xbox 360.

I intend to start by getting Dark Siders. I'm debating between getting BioShock 2 or Arkham Asylum to start. I may get the first BioShock and Dead Space as well, seeing as both are remarkably cheap at this point.

Are there any suggestions anyone else who has a 360 would be willing to recommend?

(Heads up, I'm generally not into FPSes (with a few exceptions)).

ARKHAM ASYLUM.

You like Comics...I know you do...

You will regret not getting it. It's TOPS.

Also...get The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom...

I heartily enjoyed the demo...I wish I could get it.

I would say...too bad you aren't getting a PS3..cause then we could play SF4...but SF4 doesn't work online on the PS3 anyway...(Ask Richard about that one...we really tried!)

Congrats on the console purchase.

Here's my thought: Grab Arkham Aslyum ahead of Bioshock. I've played both, and that would be my suggestion.

However! It will be really hard to go back to Bioshock 1 after you've played Bioshock 2. Anyone whose played the game knows that.

However, I would suggest maybe looking into that Bioshock/Oblivion Double Pack, you should be able to grab it for $30 or less.....and that's one hell of a deal.

Skip Darksiders(trust me), get Arkham Asylum. And get Battlefield Bad Company 2. Just so I can play with you :)

Oh and get The Orange Box.

If you're looking for an RPG, I'd suggest Mass Effect/Mass Effect 2, Fable II (I would have an excuse to play this again [multiplayer]), or Elder Scrolls IV.

If action games are your goal, there's Ninja Gaiden II, Bayonetta, Assassin's Creed/Assassin's Creed II, and uh... I dunno. Other stuff.

Of course there's incredibly valuable Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, 30 + games for cheap cheap cheap!

There's a wealth of games you could download too, like Castle Crashers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (arcade), Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers.

Halo Wars is a good RTS title, is easy to learn, and has cooperative campaign.

As for FPS games... well, Halo 3 is still the one I play the most, simply because its more accessible and doesn't punish players new to the multiplayer scene. I don't care what anyone says. Also, there is both local and LIVE multiplayer. It also has Forge, which is freaking awesome. Forge allows you to customize maps for use in multiplayer. I once made some Resident Evil themed Halo 3 maps... As far as Halo 3 ODST is concerned... its only worth buying for the multiplayer maps. The Call of Duty games are... well, you know the Overthinker's stance on that game series.

You might also want to see about investing some cash in some of the original XBOX titles, like Psychonauts and the KotOR games. Also, Jet Set Radio Future.

So first off, how much Arkham Asylum going for? I don't mind buying it new per sey, but I'm not going crazy this pay check. The system is already 300, so I'll probably only get a game or two. In the mean time, I'll just borrow from friends or family members.

Also, this P.B. Winterbottom sounds interesting...looks like it's right up my alley.

Congrats on the console purchase.

Oh and get The Orange Box.

The general consensus I understood was that Darkisders was a good Zelda clone. How come you don't recommend it?

Also, sorry, Battlefield Bad Company would just be a waste of my money. I'd maybe play it a few times and either toss it aside or sell it. As I said, most FPSes don't do much for me. Certainly military ones.

I've been interested in The Orange Box though...how much is that going for currently? It's been out for a while.

If you're looking for an RPG, I'd suggest Mass Effect/Mass Effect 2, Fable II (I would have an excuse to play this again [multiplayer]), or Elder Scrolls IV.

It's at this point I should probably mention most western RPGs don't do it for me. I dunno why. I suppose it's because most of them are similar to paper and pen RPGs, which never really thrilled me.

It's also worth pointing out that sadly I won't have it hooked up to an internet connection for a while, so sadly LiveArcade games are out for now. I'd get a wireless adapter (since that's what our house is set up on) BUT they sell them for $100 extra?

Seriously Microsoft?

Anyway, all that being said, Mass Effect might be worth a look, but I'm hesitant. My TV is analog and I'm not upgrading any time soon. Mass Effect 2 is almost unplayable on my TV since the words are not viewable in SD. Does the first game have a similar problem?

Thanks for reminding me about old Xbox games. The ones you mentioned (minus KOtOR) was half the reason I initially wanted a 360.

RedWizard
03-09-2010, 03:48 PM
Well, most 360 games have ridiculous tiny font, but ME2 is the worst I have ever seen, by far. Mass Effect isn't near as bad as its successor.

As far as a wireless receiver for the 360 is concerned, you'd probably do better looking for a 3rd party device. Microsoft overcharges for pretty much everything they can.

Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, and Infinite Undiscovery are all developed by Japanese-based studios. Ive never played Lost Odyssey though. Heard its rather depressing. Infinite Undiscovery I found to be quite boring.

I've seen Arkham settling it at $40 Canadian again, although oddly enough, the last time I was in Wal-Mart, the Special Edition was $30.......

As for Bioshock 1 and 2, they are both good games (my roommate and I are still playing 2), but what I meant was in terms of gameplay. I'll just say the exact example.

In the first game, and in the second, you get your guns, and your plasmids. But in the first game, you can only equip a plasmid or a gun, whereas in the second game, you hold both out at the same time...making for much faster combat and a lot less annoying when it combat. Ammo also changes faster in 2.

I would suggest playing both of them, all I meant is you should pick up the first one first and play it through, and I think possibly doing that combo pack might be a great way to do it.

I'm still hesitant on Conviction. Just doesn't look like the Splinter Cell I love.

The online has been changed a lot (never did play online so don't care much for that) but the single-player looks awesome as fuck.

First time I saw the trailer I came. The last time a trailer ever made me so excited was the 1st trailer for MGS4.

...is that 360 exclusive? Oh well...no big loss. I like the first SC quite a bit...but each one got...just...less fun. Double Agent ruined any excitement for Sam Fisher I had. Fundamentally it was an okay game...it just lacked the ultimate secret agent feeling that the others had...

Not the same here. That mark and shoot feature does not interest me in the least. The leap to a basically no real stealth gameplay I do not like at all.
Thanks everyone, I have much to consider now.

So, Fedaykin, what was it you didn't like about DarkSiders?

It outright copies almost all of Links abilities/tools, along with God of War sword swinging-any combo variation(it is seriously a one button masher) and an outright clone of Portal's portal gun. All of that put together with sub par graphics, generic emotionless characters you care shit about, and a badly executed storyline.

I didn't even finish it and I already traded it in. Save your money, if you really want to play it just rent it. Trust me.

From what I understand you have to earn those "mark and shoot" moments. Keep in mind that this SC has been in development for a few years now. The development cycle hasn't been this long since the first one.

A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHES

360! Go!

WanderingMind

Here are my recommendations:

Tales of Vesperia

I know you weren't a fan of Tales of Symphonia, but this game is better. The characters are more interesting this time, the story is less cliched and a lot darker, and the combat system has some slight improvements. You can free run in battle without targeting an enemy, something that was missing from the earlier Tales games. I recommend putting some time aside for Vesperia, though, because it's very long. It can take up to 80 hours on the first run, especially if you do sidequests. Though, if I could only recommend one RPG for the 360, this is it.

Eternal Sonata

If you want a 2nd RPG for the 360, get this game. The combat system is interesting, but the story and characters are by far the weakest feature of Eternal Sonata. The story has potential, but the execution is poor and the plot jumps the shark early on, sinks deeper later in the game, and crash and burn by the time you get to the ending. At around 25-30 hours, it's a lot shorter than Vesperia. Unlike Vesperia, replay value isn't strong.

Crackdown

A sandbox third person shooter where you play a supercop as you take down three criminal gangs. You can power up your character and you will gain the ability to jump high, run really fast, and punch people and objects so hard, you may send them flying. It's been out for a while, but if you can find someone to play co-op with on Live, you will have a lot of fun. I've only played on single player, but it was still a blast.

Shadow Complex

A short shooter done in the style of Super Metroid. It only takes about 4 hours or so, but it's one of the best XBLA games I've purchased so far. Replay value to be had.

Splosion Man

You jump by exploding. You bounce off walls by exploding. You fight bosses by exploding. This platformer is all about exploding. Don't let the simplicity of this game fool you...it's very tough, especially in the later levels. You get treated to one of my favorite video game endings ever if you can make it to the end of this game.

So there are two free games that you can get off XBLA to my knowledge.

The first is Doritos: Dash For Destruction. The only good things I can say about this game are that it is easy to play and easy to get Achievement Points.

The second is Aegis Wing. It's a side scrolling shooter that can be played with more than one person and I recommend giving it a shot.

I just prefer the Blades systems since its so simplistic and easy to use. There isn't a bunch of frivolous stuff that I never use on it (there is on NXE). I remember the good ol' days...

Anyways, there's different deals for Gold membership. The most cost-effective one is $50/year. Which comes to like $4.50 a month, if you break it down. The sometimes have deals though, so be on the lookout. I was able to purchase my yearly gold membership for $40 last year.

Aye, but what's the point of adding people if you can't play against them? Now that's just silly.

Speaking of which, I MAY not have to get a wireless adapter. A friend of mine and I were talking and he mentioned the idea that my laptop COULD be used in its stead, I'd simply need the proper ethernet cable and have to follow procedure.

You can do it. You have to use a crossover cable instead of an ethernet cable, though.

My cousin and I used to have to do this over at my grandmother's house before they got wireless adapters. It's not too hard, you've just gotta have the crossover cable.

We got one for cheap back in the day because original Xbox system-link cables are just crossover cables.

WELL.

...FUCK.

So it seems that due to mysterious circumstances beyond my control, my previous Xbox Live account (i.e GrandLineMaster) has been destroyed and/or otherwise corrupted. I've no idea WHY. All I know is I was trying to log into my Zune account some time several weekends ago and it had apparently been wiped clean.

I can still USE my GrandLineMaster account. I just can't log online with it.

This bothers me for two very important reasons.

1. All my gamer info? More or less gone. Having to re-earn achievements is annoying, but not my primary concern. However, more over, I now need to get EVERYONE'S INFO AGAIN, as I am now friendless (well, MOSTLY friendless. I'm still friends with GlassAdam, thanks to our Zunes).

So, if you own a 360 and we were indeed friends previously, please help me out by rectifying this mistake. I don't recall everyone's Gamertags. My "NEW" one is now GumGumCannon. So if you do hear from someone by that name, don't fret, it's just me.

2. Please, oh PLEASE tell me that this DOESN'T mean SnakeEyez' EXTREMELY generous Christmas gift is gone forever, because I will have to tear some poor Microsoft customer service agent a new asshole.

EDIT:

Stupid curiosity. If I were to download an add-on under GumGumCannon, can I use it on an other account? Does it matter?

Hm. Well, this is just me speculating, so don't take this as gospel: I don't think this will be an issue. I think Live accounts are associated with the machine itself, not the username. I say this because you have the option of changing your XBox Live username whenever you want to (for 800 freaking points), and doing so doesn't affect your Live status at all. As long as you're still using the same machine, your Live account should still be intact even if you go by a different username.

...and if I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

I hope so. All I know is I can't transfer use avatar clothing I paid for on another account (which still pisses me off, it's not like it's NOT on my hard drive or anything), so I wasn't sure if this applied to using Live Gold as well.

As a plus, as I was thinking about in the car drive to work, while it's generally still annoying, it DOES give me an excuse to replay Arkham Asylum and Lords of Shadow (once I get it back). Which is kind of a plus.

Some games I'm less thrilled at the prospect of playing over again though.

Call customer service, bro. Crazy shit has happened to my account before and they've ironed it out for me. They're actually really surprisingly helpful.

I can't think of any reason your account is tripping balls but, seriously, before you make a new one or something, call them and see if they can work it out.

Thanks amigo. Sad to hear I'm not the only one who's gone through stupid crap, but it does please me to hear they have good customer service (in truth, the guy I spoke with regarding my Zune was really helpful too).

I honestly have NO idea why it's happening. The only possible event I can link it to was the fact that I needed to download the update for avatars (so they would be compatable with Kinect), but since my connection sucks BALLS it kept stopping on me about halfway through the download. So I took it over to my friend's house and he put my hard drive on his 360 and finished it for me.

I don't know why that would, but it's the only thing I can think of. All I know is after that it basically acted like my account was a brand new account (which I discovered when trying to log onto Zune.com, since my Zune and 360 account were linked) and when I called Customer serive, they just set me up under a new account with my other gmail address.

On the phone with Customer Support. Guy's never heard of my problem before, and the options aren't looking positive.

Well...son of a biscuit. :neko_030:

Did he give any sort of explanation why? That thing still had a good 10 months on it. Does that time just...disappear?

Yes, he did.

Apparently, when you sign up for Xbox Gold account, it's just like when you download an avatar item. It's for that account only.

Why? Hell if I know. Money I assume.
