Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2)

I was looking through some used games yesterday and came across a few different looking copies of MGS2. I saw: MGS2: Sons of Liberty, MGS2, and MGS2: Subsistence.

Are they completely separate games? Are they the same game with different stuff? Why the many titles?

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is the original game that came out.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance contains the original game (MGS2) plus some extras (VR Training, etc).
Metal Gear Solid 2 is the game that came in a boxset, The Essentials Collection, which contains MGS1, MGS2, and MGS3. This is MGS2: Substance with different packaging.

If you're going to purchase one, get Substance.

Gotcha. I have been putting some thought into trying these games. I have the first one on the PS1, I just haven't played it yet.
