In this final episode of Ergo Proxy, pieces are played and revelations uncovered as the final fight commences. Monad makes her return and tries to convince Vincent to join her as Romdo falls apart.
Alright, here’s the story that is revealed in this final episode:
Proxies are creators of this world. Each dome city has her own Creator; these “gods” created the city and its people after an apocalypse wiped out humanity and damaged the ecosystem in an extend that living became impossible for humans. These Proxies created dome cities to protect yet-to-be-created humans in order for them to survival the poison outside.Vincent Law a.k.a. Ergo Proxy, the Agent of Death, was Romdo’s Creator, but he left Romdo because he was an “incomplete god”.
He appointed Donov Mayer (Re-l’s grandfather who dies in the previous episode) as the head of Romdo and left Romdo. He went to his beloved Monad, who was the Creator of Mosque Dome City, and after he gave her his memories for safekeeping, he then wiped out his memory clean. If I remember correctly (or got the plot right), this was so he would understand the humans better.
Now, when we left off, Re-l and Vincent confronted another Proxy who looks a lot like Vincent (talk about double-personality!). This new Proxy is Proxy One. After a little chat, he informs Re-l that Daedalus is planning on blowing up the whole city, so Re-l goes to stop him while Ergo Proxy and Proxy One talk about the things I mentioned in the first paragraph.
We also learn that some of the incidents in the previous episodes that happened (like Donov Mayer’s death or destorying Amnesia) was cause not by Ergo Proxy, but by Proxy One.
Re-l reaches Daedalus’ office, but she’s too late — the reactors were already activated. She confronts Daedalus, but he’s has turned into an emo-bitch, so their conversation isn’t going anywhere. Suddenly, we see the other Re-l (whom we were calling “White Re-l”) appears flying above them! She has grown wings! Daedalus goes after her, but he doesn’t get far, for thanks to reactors he activated, the whole dome was trembling and so a giant piece of the building crushes him (Karma is a bitch, eh?). Before he dies, he mentions something interesting to Re-l: he says that the Proxies can’t get too close to the sun. We’re gonna come back to this later.
Ergo Proxy and Proxy One are fighting when Monad (White Re-l) comes to stop them, but as soon as she gets there, we see Ergo Proxy’s hand went through Proxy One’s body. Monad asks Ergo Proxy to forget about everything that has happened and to go with her. She holds him and they teleport to somewhere in the sky. They’re both mesmerized when they see the sun. Remember, up until now, we actually never saw a clear sky in Ergo Proxy. The pollution was so bad that the sun was never visible, but now Monad took Vincent so high that they can see the sun. She asks him to go with her, but Vincent remembers Re-l and tells Monad that he has to go back.
Monad is sad to hear that, but she accepts and takes Vincent’s pendant and flies towards the sun. Remember Daedalus’ warning about Proxies and the sun? Well, we see Momad’s body shrink and then disappear after she gets too close to the sun. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? This is the reason why Proxy One lost the battle to Vincent; they were exposed to sunlight, so he gradually became weaker, but for some reason Vincent isn’t affected by this. Maybe it’s because he’s Ergo Proxy.
Re-l who was still inside the dome is trying to escape since everything all hell has broken loose inside of the dome. She almost falls to her death when Pino and Kristeva (Raul‘s AutoReiv) comes to her rescue. They’re on the Rabbit getting away from the wreckage when Pino says that she can see Vincent. They change their direction and go towards him to pick him up. This series finishes with Vincent’s monologue about a new start — a world that’s going to be without any Proxies.
This is the last scene from Ergo Proxy (you may need to turn up your volume ;P)
.:: Thoughts ::.
I really enjoyed this show. Even thought the plot got confusing towards the end (specially in the final two episodes where everything was revealed), I thought this anime was well done and very damn entertaining. After watching this show, I kinda look down on other anime. Hehe… they all seem so kiddy-shit compared to Ergo Proxy. Too bad this was a sleeper-hit probably because of all the philosophical aspects, references, and themes. The production aesthetic of this show is just great and I highly recommend this anime for those who enjoy real, grown-up stories and are tired of kiddy-crap shows *cough*Naruto*Bleach*cough*; especially now that they released a DVD Box-set for this amazing anime.
Story: Like I mentioned before, the story gets complicated towards the end (especially if you watch it in subs) , but still very engaging.
Animation: I started out with around 50 screencaps per episode, but that wasn’t doing the gorgeous animation justice, so I bumped it up to 100 and later to 200 images per episode. The animation is so well done that you can screencap it and use it as wallpaper.
Voice-Overs: I used to think all dubs sucked… until I watched Ergo Proxy. Here’s something you’d never hear my say ever again: the English voice-actor for Vincent out-performed the original Japanese. Now that’s a statement. The rest of the cast were solid, but the Japanese VO was better.
Music: Ergo Proxy has great soundtracks and background music. The opening theme (Kiri) and a few other tracks from the OST are on my iPod.
Check out this track from the first OST. This song is called “Centzontotochtin” (again, you may need to turn up your volume ;P):

oh, you finally finished it. it confused me from time to time as well and i ended up having to rewatch the entire episode just to get a grasp on what they’re trying to say. i watched it with subs so i can’t really make a comparison but from that clip, Vincent’s voice actor sounds like Akihiko from P3, lol…Liam O’Brien is his name i think.
i was at Best Buy earlier and i saw an old Evenescence CD. it had this on the cover (http://www.alternative-zine.com/images2/albums/evanescence_fallen__big.jpg) you can’t tell me she doesn’t remind you of Re-L, lol.

Yeah, finally, huh. I watched each episode twice (once subbed and once dubbed) just so I understand the story. Heh…
Oh, and you’re right about Akihiko’s VO being O’Brien. I Wiki’ed him when I started watching this show; I really like his performance.
Hahaha~ I saw a comparison image of Evenescence girl and Re-l a while ago… they used the same picture you posted actually. Let me see if I can find it.
EDIT: here it is:

Gurren Lagann (maybe spelled wrong) It a great anime, it’s a good one to see after Ergo Proxy because its on that same “awesomeness level”, maybe even better. The anime is ridiculous, funny and they say stuff like “believe in me who believes in you!!!” as they point to the sky. And then there is soul eater, I think made by the same people who made Gurren Lagann. That’s similar to Gurren Lagann, but still good.

Well, the only thing Gurren Lagann and Soul Eater have in common is that they’re both produced by Aniplex.
Different people worked on each series, hence the different art-style and story telling.

Oh, man. I need to re-watch it, too. Hehe.
I don’t remember exactly why he said that, but if I had to guess, I’d say it could be because he was the original Proxy (not sure, but I think that’s true. He’s called Proxy One, after all.) and all the other Proxies were created after him. Or maybe it’s because they’re all “gods”, so in a sense, they’re all one entity.

Oh that a good analysis I think :)
Another people are wondering about is, why isn’t Vincent injured by the Sun ? Even he choosed the human form, he remains proxy ?
My opinion is a lil’ bit poetic, but maybe it’s because he learned the pain of being human, rejected, loved, so he is somehow “completed” ? xD *yeah… wathever xD*
What’s your opinion ?
To thank you : Lovely fanart found on DA : http://denoro.deviantart.com/art/010809-131697131
Oh and excuse me for my crappy English .__. hope your will understand :-o

That sounds plausible. I’d believe it.
I also thought maybe it’s because Vincent was an “incomplete god” (they said that in the anime), so maybe that why his body resist the sunlight.
And another thought: he is Ergo Proxy, the messenger of death, so perhaps he’s suppose to be able to withstand the sunlight in order to be able to carryout his mission.
That was a beautiful fanart. Thank you~

Why he is able to stand in sunlight – It could be that he is “completed” and/or “imperfect god” (post #11/12) and/or he’s the “Agent of Death” who is supposed to make sure all the Proxies die after the awakening because they are not needed anymore (a reason why he is a powerful proxy). Vincent is also the “shadow of the creator.” 295 more proxies to go?
