Need help picking up new manga! Let me know what you’re reading and why it’s good!
I was at Borders the other day to pick up the last volume of Welcome to the N.H.K. and noticed something interesting: publishers are committing to a variety of genres, and not just Shounen. I wonder how long it’ll take before manga becomes mainstream like videos games.
Since N.H.K. is finished, I was looking to pick up something else. Any suggestions? Write a couple of sentences letting us know why you like that particular manga with your post.
Also picked up Shaman King volume 18 and Afro Samurai volume 01. Shaman King is at it’s “boring” arc right now. You learn a lot of stuff about characters you don’t really care about, but all that’s gonna change in the next two volumes; volume 19 especially. That’s my favorite volume where you learn about Anna’s past. It’s an amazing volume that I’ll be getting in two months! Can’t wait.
Seven Seas is publishing Afro Samurai and they’re doing an excellent job. The only complaint I have is that the book is published “flopped” (meaning it’s printed mirrored and in reverse order — from left to right).
The manga is very dark and moody with amazing graphics and drawing style. The root of the story is the same, but a lot of different stuff happens in the manga that differ from the incidents in the anime. Afro is a lot darker and emotionless in this manga. He does did a couple of things here that shocked me. It’s worth picking up, especially if you enjoyed the anime. The 2nd season is in the works, by the way.

well, I can’t really recommend a lot of stuff, since what I read is very old school and odd. But one thing I will recommend is hellsing… since it just plain rocks in every sense of the word.
And damn, I wish I had japanese bookstore like they have in japan… cause that one in japan town had an insane amount of rare tezuka manga that I cannot find anywhere else.

Lessee… good manga…
Off the top of my head – Aqua/Aria, Negima, Yotsubato, NHK, and Mushishi. I’m currently trying to get all five series :3
Aqua/Aria is awesome because it is iyashikei stuff and the art is beautiful and the scenery is great and the characters are lovely and it’s all just wonderful.
Negima is good too, mostly because I like the characters and it provides balance to my reading with its action.
Yotsubato’s a fun, light-hearted comedy and it’s my way of making up for not getting Azumanga Daioh.
NHK is well, it provides the crazy, whacked-out stuff I don’t normally get.
Mushishi’s nice and deep and also provides some serious-ness in my collection.

I recommend Gunsmith Cats. The art is really good and the action sequences are awesome. Car chases, shootouts, you name it.

crap! I just wrote a super long post and then forgot to enter the anti span word at the bottom!!
So I will just say Negima and buso renkin.
They both have good characters and good interesting stories that don’t leave you feeling bored. Also I have manga reviews on my site and I update everyday so you can look there if you want to :)
